Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has begun rolling out 320 new Real-Time Passenger Information (RTPI) displays across the city region as part of ongoing efforts to improve journey quality and accessibility on the Bee Network.
The displays are being supplied and managed by Vix Technology, with the project launching in December through a pilot installation at North Manchester General Hospital.
The first installation marked the start of a wider program to provide passengers with live, reliable travel information at bus stops, shelters and interchanges. William Garratt, project manager at Vix Technology, said, “The installation of the first display was an exciting moment, a vital step for the Bee Network towards smarter, passenger-focused mobility in the city region.”
The new RTPI estate is designed to support passengers as they plan and adapt journeys across the increasingly connected Bee Network. Screens will present clear, easy-to-read updates and are engineered to operate in challenging environments. The rollout includes robust outdoor displays, large-format indoor units and energy-efficient, battery-powered signs suitable for locations without a fixed power supply.
All displays will be securely monitored and controlled via Vix’s display management platform, enabling real-time oversight and system resilience. The full rollout is scheduled for completion in 2026, representing a significant milestone in TfGM’s ambition to deliver a fully integrated and accessible public transport system for Greater Manchester.
The program forms part of TfGM’s Improving Journeys initiative, which focuses on making every day travel smoother, safer and more inclusive. Several of the new displays incorporate text-to-speech functionality, supporting passengers with sight loss by making real-time information more accessible.
Matthew Wilks, business development director at Vix, commented, “Accessible real-time information is essential to an inclusive network. By embracing text-to-speech within the Bee Network, TfGM is helping remove barriers, enabling more people to travel independently and with confidence.”
Graham Banks, travel information manager at TfGM, highlighted the broader network benefits of the project. He said: “Delivering a world-class, integrated transport system for Greater Manchester means making travel easier, more reliable, and accessible for everyone. We’re delighted to be rolling out real-time information displays at key locations in every part of Greater Manchester and at four interchanges.
“By providing live, clear updates we will help passengers to make informed choices and enjoy a smoother journey. I am delighted that we have partnered with Vix to deliver this next important step forward for our customers,” he added.
