Swarco UK launches PTC3 traffic controller with AI-ready capabilities

Urban junction with dedicated cycle lanes and traffic signals in a UK city centre. A bicycle traffic light displays an amber cycle symbol in the foreground. The road features painted cycle lane markings and is bordered by a mix of modern curved orange-clad buildings and traditional red brick Victorian architecture. Pedestrian bollards separate the pavement from the carriageway.
The PTC3 Controller is designed to support AI-driven traffic management at urban junctions

Swarco UK & Ireland has unveiled its PTC3 Controller series, a traffic controller platform designed to support AI-driven traffic management and reduce energy consumption for local authorities.

The new controller, which holds TOPAS 2500B approval and maintains full compatibility with existing configurations, builds on the company’s established PTC1 Controller. Several UK local authorities are already trialling the system.

SWARCO PTC-3 documentation is visible on the inside of the cabinet door. The cabinet is mounted on a concrete plinth at a street location with glass building frontage visible in the background.
Swarco’s PTC3 Controller maintains the same physical dimensions as its predecessors for easier upgrades

The PTC3 series is designed to work with adaptive and AI-driven traffic management strategies, including Swarco’s ImFlow and Smart AI systems. These enable authorities to use real-time data to optimise city-wide traffic flows and respond rapidly to incidents.

“More than just a traffic controller, the PTC3 is a platform for the next generation of intelligent mobility,” says John Pickworth, managing director at Swarco UK & Ireland. “By pairing energy efficiency with data-driven control and resilient design, it empowers local authorities and operators to manage traffic more sustainably, efficiently and intelligently.”

The controller provides direct monitoring of ultra-low power LED units down to 1W, which the company says reduces energy consumption and extends equipment life. An optional uninterruptible power supply (UPS) maintains network operation during power outages.

The system uses Swarco’s ITC-3 hardware platform, which is deployed in more than 50 countries worldwide. Enhanced processing power enables faster analytics and support for both current and future technologies.

Available in small and large cabinet formats, the PTC3 series shares the same physical dimensions as the PTC1, allowing authorities to upgrade without replacing the controller plinth. This approach reduces both costs and environmental impact during system transitions.
