The first ITS Africa Conference (ITSAC 2027) will take place on 9–10 March 2027 in the Cape Winelands, South Africa, and is inviting European intelligent transport systems (ITS) experts to contribute to the programme as speakers.

Held under the theme ‘Bridging Continents for Smarter Mobility’, the event will bring together representatives from local, provincial and national government, transport authorities, operators, industry, academia, investors and development agencies.

“ERTICO is proud to partner with the first ITS Africa Conference, helping to shape a programme that fosters meaningful dialogue and the exchange of knowledge and expertise in both directions,” says Joost Vantomme, chief executive of ERTICO – ITS Europe. “The Conference presents an important opportunity to strengthen ties between Africa and Europe, bringing together diverse experiences, perspectives, and expertise to address mobility challenges.”

Nine topic areas

The programme will address nine key areas: public transport; smart cities; ITS education, skills and research; communication and renewable energy; traffic signals; tolling; freeway management systems and rural ITS; cross-border operations, ports and rail; and technology in road safety.

According to the organisers, the conference is designed as a working event rather than a showcase. It will feature two days of sessions, with an exhibition running alongside the programme. The aim is to create a platform for knowledge exchange between the European and Southern African ITS communities, involving organisations and professionals who plan, develop, fund and deliver transport systems.

Format and call for contributions

The inaugural event will start with an opening session delivered in partnership with ERTICO. The first day will close with an evening welcome function.

ITSAC 2027 is seeking transport and mobility experts from across Europe to contribute through keynote presentations, panel discussions and other sessions. Contributions are welcome from experts across the conference topics, and organisations can also explore sponsorship opportunities.

Organisers and contacts

The conference is organised by Innovative Transport Solutions (Pty) Ltd in partnership with ERTICO. It is hosted by the City of Cape Town and supported by the Western Cape Government Department of Infrastructure.

European experts interested in contributing to the programme or in sponsorship can contact ITSAC27@mail.ertico.com. More information is available at www.itsac.co.za.
