Spanish traffic technology company ACISA is testing a new edge-computing system in Granada, Spain, that uses artificial intelligence to manage priority requests from public transport and emergency vehicles at intersections.
The pilot forms part of the SovereignEdgeEU/COGNIT project, a European initiative funded by Horizon Europe that aims to shift data processing from cloud-based systems to edge computing infrastructure closer to sensors and end users.
ACISA has integrated its M-Hub traffic controller as a client within the COGNIT platform. When a bus, ambulance or other authorized vehicle requests priority at an intersection, the M-Hub analyzes the situation locally. For complex scenarios, it connects to the COGNIT platform to run advanced models using a digital twin of the intersection, receiving real-time recommendations on whether to grant priority.
The system processes vehicle-to-everything (V2X) data and video communications in real time at the edge, rather than sending information to remote cloud servers. This approach reduces latency and bandwidth requirements while keeping data processing within European infrastructure.

“ACISA’s M-Hub enables the processing of V2X data and video communications in real time, supporting complex services for connected and autonomous vehicles, executes AI at the edge, and prepares the infrastructure for 5G/6G,” says Antonio Lalaguna, CTO of ACISA. “Its versatility makes it a key tool for urban mobility and the deployment of innovative services in cloud, edge, or local environments.”
The COGNIT project addresses the current situation where around 80% of data is processed in cloud systems, a market dominated by large non-European companies. The European Digital Strategy anticipates that much of this processing will migrate toward edge computing over the next five years, improving data sovereignty and system security.
The AI-assisted Function as a Service environment developed within the project enables distributed applications to run across the cloud-edge continuum. The infrastructure supports applications in mobility, IoT, industry and smart cities.
ACISA, a technology company within the Aldesa group, has over 45 years of experience developing solutions for smart infrastructure across renewable energy, mobility, energy efficiency, industry and security sectors.
