Kapsch TrafficCom upgrades New Zealand traffic system

Kapsch TrafficCom has completed a major upgrade of the traffic management system it operates for the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA), a deployment that now covers 18,500km of roads and highways across the country.

The upgraded Dynac V17 system went live at the Auckland Traffic Operations Centre (ATOC) on 10 June 2026, marking a milestone in the long-standing partnership between Kapsch TrafficCom, headquartered in Vienna, Austria, and the New Zealand agency.

“This achievement would not have been possible without the outstanding contribution, commitment, and collaboration of multiple teams across regions,” said Daniel Vazquez, executive vice-president for Asia-Pacific at Kapsch TrafficCom. “It reflects the strength of our global collaboration and our ability to deliver complex systems at national scale.”

Nationwide network integration

The system forms the backbone of traffic management across New Zealand, supporting operations at a national level. It integrates a broad range of infrastructure, including the 18,500km of roads and highways, seven tunnels, and Auckland Harbour Bridge, which is equipped with a moveable barrier machine. It also connects 150,000 field devices, such as cameras, variable message signs, traffic sensors and other roadside equipment, with dozens of subsystems brought together on a single platform.

This setup gives NZTA operators a real-time overview of the entire network, allowing them to respond quickly to changing conditions, including congestion, incidents and other disruptions. According to Kapsch TrafficCom, the result is improved situational awareness and more stable, reliable traffic operations across the country.

“The Dynac upgrade has been successfully completed and ATOC is now operating on the upgraded platform,” said Lucretia McDonald, senior project manager at NZTA. “The close cooperation between all parties have been key to ensuring a smooth transition and reliable ongoing operations.”

Updates without taking the system offline

A key feature of the new version is the ability to carry out online imports, allowing updates to be implemented without taking the entire system offline. This is intended to enable more frequent and efficient updates, supporting continuous system improvement while minimising operational disruption.

Wider rollout continues

The Auckland deployment is part of a broader rollout across multiple traffic operations centres in New Zealand. Traffic operations centres in Wellington, and for the Lyttelton Tunnel near Christchurch, are scheduled to follow. Once the upgrades are completed across all centres, the system is expected to enable coordinated operations between them and provide additional redundancy across the national network.

The cooperation builds on a long-term partnership between the two organisations. Under the current agreement, Kapsch TrafficCom is responsible for maintaining and securing the system, while NZTA manages day-to-day operations through its own traffic operators.

Kapsch TrafficCom has subsidiaries and branches in more than 25 countries and is listed on the Prime Market segment of the Vienna Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol KTCG. In its 2025/26 financial year, the company’s roughly 2,700 employees generated revenues of €431 million.
