Public transportation in five major Japanese cities is becoming easier to navigate thanks to a new partnership between global mobility app Moovit and Japan’s Association for Open Data of Public Transportation (ODPT).
The collaboration brings Moovit’s real-time public transit platform to Tokyo, Yokohama, Kyoto, Hiroshima, and Kumamoto, making it available to more than 24 million residents. The launch includes integrated data from 164 transit agencies, covering 3,500 lines and 54,000 stops, and provides a single app for commuters to access detailed trip planning tools.
Available on iOS, Android, and the web, Moovit combines official transport data with crowdsourced updates to offer real-time arrival times, service alerts, and step-by-step directions with deboarding notifications. The app also supports accessibility features designed to assist individuals with disabilities, making it easier for all users to navigate complex transit networks.
“By combining official transit data with real-time crowd updates, Moovit makes public transportation more accessible, convenient, and reliable. We look forward to expanding further across Japan, to improve the daily commute for even more people,” said Ziv Kabaretti, chief of product at Moovit.
This move is expected to benefit not only residents but also tourists. As Japan experiences a growing number of international visitors, ODPT sees Moovit as a tool to make travel simpler.
“As more foreign tourists visit Japan, it is our mission to provide accurate and timely information on Japan’s complex public transportation network to them. The launch of Moovit in Japan will significantly enhance services for both locals and overseas guests,” added Dr Ken Sakamura, chair of ODPT.
The partnership is part of Moovit’s broader mission to simplify urban mobility around the globe. Looking ahead, the company plans to expand into Okinawa, further extending its reach across Japan.
