The City of Dublin, Ohio, has deployed an AI-powered pedestrian safety system from ISS (Intelligent Security Systems) to improve visibility and driver awareness at a neighborhood crosswalk.
The SecurOS Soffit system has been installed at the Brand Road pedestrian crossing near Coventry Woods Drive following concerns from residents about nighttime visibility and vehicle speeds in the area.
City officials evaluated traffic patterns, pedestrian volumes and speed data before selecting the Soffit system as an additional safety measure at the crossing. The technology was chosen for its ability to deliver illumination only when pedestrians are present, rather than lighting the roadway continuously. According to the city, this approach enhances safety while reducing unnecessary light spill.
Unlike conventional street lighting, the Soffit uses advanced video analytics to detect pedestrians as they approach and enter a crosswalk. When a person is identified, a dynamic LED lighting array activates and tracks the pedestrian’s movement, illuminating only the individual and their immediate path as they cross the street. The system is designed to draw drivers’ attention precisely when and where it is needed, improving awareness without contributing to light pollution.
“The Soffit has exceeded our expectations by providing the right amount of illumination to increase driver awareness of the presence of pedestrians in the crosswalk at night,” said Marc Dilsaver, transportation program manager for the City of Dublin. “Greater awareness is leading to more drivers yielding to pedestrians, and that’s the goal.”
In addition to real-time lighting, the Soffit platform generates actionable data that can help municipalities better understand pedestrian activity and crossing behavior. The system is also capable of integrating with more traditional crosswalk safety infrastructure, including rectangular rapid flashing beacons, LED-enhanced signage and high-intensity activated crosswalk, or HAWK, signals.
ISS said the Dublin project represents the first deployment of the SecurOS Soffit system in Ohio, marking a milestone for the technology in the region.
“We are proud to partner with the City of Dublin on the first deployment of SecurOS Soffit in Ohio. This project demonstrates the city’s forward-thinking commitment to public safety and innovation, and we’re excited to see how our technology is making a real difference for pedestrians and drivers alike,” said Joe Harvey, ITS market sector leader at ISS. “By working together, we’re setting a new benchmark for pedestrian safety throughout the region.”
