Las Vegas is piloting an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered lighting system at First Street and Ogden Avenue, one block from the Fremont Street Experience, in a bid to improve pedestrian safety in one of the city’s busiest downtown corridors.
The SecurOS Soffit system, from video intelligence provider ISS (Intelligent Security Systems), was installed in partnership with Pinnacle Consulting & Advisors. It marks the first proof of concept (POC) deployment of the technology in Las Vegas.
Part of Vision Zero initiative
The pilot forms part of Las Vegas’ Vision Zero initiative, a data-driven policy framework aimed at eliminating traffic-related fatalities and severe injuries. Vision Zero originated in Europe in the late 1990s and has since gained traction in the US, where more than 70 communities have now committed to the initiative and its goal of safer street design.
The installation site sits close to the Fremont Street Experience, which attracts more than 24 million visitors a year. ISS says the deployment reflects the city’s recognition of a persistent and disproportionate safety risk faced by pedestrians in high-activity areas.
How the system works
Unlike conventional streetlights, which broadly illuminate a wide area, the Soffit uses analytics to detect pedestrians as they approach and cross the road, directing a dynamic LED array to track and illuminate each person as they cross. ISS says this targeted approach increases driver awareness without creating glare or unnecessary light pollution, a consideration the company highlights as important in a dense urban setting such as downtown Las Vegas. In standby mode, the system also provides static illumination of the crosswalk, intended to help drivers become familiar with the crossing’s location before active lighting engages.
“We are proud to partner with the City of Las Vegas on this important initiative,” says Aluisio Figueiredo, chief executive of ISS. “Pedestrian safety in high-traffic urban environments demands intelligent, purpose-built solutions. This deployment is a strong example of how AI-driven technology can address real-world infrastructure challenges, providing meaningful protection where traditional countermeasures alone may not be sufficient.”
Previous deployments
The Las Vegas installation follows earlier Soffit deployments in Dublin, Ohio and Kodiak, Alaska.
ISS is headquartered in Woodbridge, New Jersey, with offices worldwide. The company was founded three decades ago and holds more than 30 patents and trademarks. Its research and development team includes more than 200 developers and engineers, and it offers a range of video analytics solutions including its SecurOS Video Intelligence Platform.
