Flock Safety, the US-based safety technology platform known for its role in solving crimes through advanced license plate recognition (LPR) systems, has announced a new partnership with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD).
The collaboration aims to address the growing dangers of impaired and reckless driving, particularly hit-and-run incidents, through both advocacy and technological innovation.
“Our mission is to help communities thrive through improved safety. That means helping law enforcement solve crimes like hit-and-runs, but it also means working toward safer roadways by building technology for increased awareness of vehicle accidents, dangerous driving, and more,” said Garrett Langley, CEO and co-founder of Flock Safety. “We’re proud to join forces with MADD and support their decades-long legacy of victim advocacy and lifesaving legislation.”
As a new member of the MADD Network, Flock Safety joins a collective of organizations committed to ending impaired driving. The company will support MADD’s efforts by amplifying prevention messages, empowering safe driving decisions, and contributing to legislative initiatives designed to reduce traffic fatalities and injuries.
“Flock Safety shares MADD’s belief that technology is a powerful tool in the fight to eliminate impaired driving,” said Stacey D Stewart, CEO of MADD.
The partnership comes as hit-and-run crashes remain a persistent and deadly issue on US roads. A 2020 study from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found that hit-and-runs account for about 5% of fatal crashes annually, claiming roughly 1,800 lives each year. Pedestrians make up 66% of those fatalities.
Flock Safety’s network of LPR cameras and audio detection sensors is already deployed across more than 6,000 communities nationwide. These systems help solve approximately 12% of reported crime in the US and play a particularly vital role in both the immediate response and subsequent investigation of hit-and-run incidents, many of which involve alcohol-impaired drivers.
Now, Flock Safety is expanding its technology suite beyond crime-solving to include road safety tools that detect crashes, dangerous driving behaviors, and unsafe road conditions. This expansion supports both law enforcement and transportation agencies in their shared mission to protect public safety.
One of the newest features, Car Crash Detection, uses Flock’s audio sensors to detect the distinct sound of a vehicle collision and alert first responders within 30 seconds. This is a significant improvement over the national average 911 response time of five to six minutes. When paired with Flock’s video cameras, operators can remotely verify the event and deploy emergency services faster, potentially saving lives.
In addition, Wrong Way Detection will soon be available as a new function on Flock’s existing LPR devices. The feature uses radar to identify vehicles driving against traffic on one-way roads or highway ramps, a behavior that the AAA Foundation reports is caused by impaired drivers in about 60% of cases. The system will flag and deter such incidents in real time, helping prevent devastating head-on collisions.
Also on the horizon is the rollout of Speed Analytics, which will leverage computer vision on LPR hardware to estimate vehicle speeds. While not intended for automated enforcement, this feature will help agencies identify high-speed areas and target interventions to reduce speeding-related crashes.
With MADD’s four-decade legacy of advocacy and Flock Safety’s technology-driven approach, the partnership marks a significant step toward reducing the toll of impaired driving on American roads and building safer, more resilient communities.
