Kapsch to deploy new urban mobility management system in Dominican Republic

Austrian end-to-end intelligent transportation systems (ITS) provider Kapsch TrafficCom has been awarded a contract to provide an urban traffic management system for the largest metropolitan area in the Caribbean.

Following a public tender, Kapsch and its local partner Evocon were selected to provide the comprehensive urban mobility management system for Santo Domingo, the capital and largest city in the Dominican Republic. The contract was awarded by the local authority Instituto Nacional de Tránsito y Transporte Terrestre (INTRANT) and includes a 17-month period for the design, construction and implementation of new transport management infrastructure and equipment, as well as four years of technical operation for the entire system. Total contract value is approximately US$20.3m (€18m) and will be shared by consortium partners Kapsch (60%) and Evocon (40%).

The first part of the tender covers engineering, delivery, installation, testing, commissioning and the deployment of Kapsch’s EcoTrafiX urban traffic management software platform and ancillary equipment. This will include 100 new intersection systems, 2,200 new traffic lights, 40 CCTV cameras, 400 CVD-standard vehicle detector video cameras, variable message signs (VMS) and control center equipment. The maintenance contract will cover 260 existing intersections that are already equipped with Kapsch systems, including traffic lights and CCTV, as well as all the newly installed systems and equipment.

The EcoTrafiX urban mobility platform helps to reduce travel time and CO2 emissions while improving travelers’ safety. By gathering all traffic data into a real-time dynamic visualization approach, operators can further optimize vehicle flow, benefiting from excellent decision support for reactive response to incidents and events as well as multi-agency coordination. The EcoTrafiX software suite includes:

• Command, which controls real-time city signals and devices;

• Expert, which includes a set of modules to optimize traffic;

• Mobility, which enables collaboration on events between multiple agencies or between multiple departments within one agency.

The EcoTrafix portfolio also includes a high-performance traffic control unit for street-level intersection operations.

This new contract strengthens Kapsch’s position in the Central and South American market, where the company’s urban traffic management systems are already being used in many major cities, including Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) and Quito (Ecuador). In October last year the Vienna-based company expanded its portfolio in the Latin American region with three more major contracts to provide advanced traffic management systems to Buenos Aires (Argentina), Lima (Peru), and Panama City (Panama). All those contracts were covered by the EcoTrafiX urban traffic management platform, albeit with different modules and applications from its software suite.

“This contract is enhancing our urban mobility management footprint in the Latin-American region”, explained André F Laux, COO of Kapsch TrafficCom. “Santo Domingo is the biggest metropolitan area in the Caribbean, which demands high requirements for mobility in the city. We are proud that our solution was chosen to help the city achieve a more efficient and safer mobility future.”
