McCain expands dynamic message signs range with Swarco’s LED technology

Following its acquisition by Swarco in August 2016, McCain Inc, a Vista, California-based advanced transportation systems supplier, has announced that the Austrian traffic equipment company’s world-renowned LED technology is now available in its line of full-color dynamic message signs (DMS).

McCain’s signs are a powerful tool for communicating traffic conditions, emergency alerts, detours, lane changes, rerouting, and similar information to drivers. Building on innovations pioneered by Swarco, McCain’s full-color DMS signs use precision optics technology that combines colors, while focusing and redirecting light.

This innovative technology radically increases sign clarity by eliminating wasted light, as well as color fading, resulting in colors that remain vivid and true. McCain’s full-color DMS deliver a superior contrast ratio that is 2.5 times better than NEMA TS 4 requirements, which provides a high contrast even when sun angles would typically limit visibility.

The superior technology used in McCain’s full-color DMS goes beyond exceptional visibility and clarity; LEDs are driven at less than 10% of their rated capacity unlike other signs whose LEDs operate at 60-90%. This results in 50% lower power consumption, reduced operating costs, increased product lifespan, and a high mean time between failures. The new line of full-color DMS, which includes variable message, blank out, and lane control signs, is available immediately to any Department of Transportation (DOT) or highways agency.

“Our full-color dynamic message signs make images appear more lifelike than ever, by delivering a vivid, brilliant display that reveals even greater detail,” said Randy Bobo, sales manager for McCain. “This groundbreaking technology is dramatically transforming the global market.”

McCain has also announced that the City of Phoenix has officially received the products from the company’s ‘Backpack Cabinet Giveaway’ competition, including a free Backpack Cabinet and a complete GRIDSMART System. In November, Victor Bingochea (above, left), a 10-year member of the City of Phoenix signal shop, was officially named the winner of McCain’s unprecedented giveaway, securing the state-of-the-art products for the Arizona city.

McCain’s director of sales, Nathan Welch, and director of marketing Trisha Tunilla, along with GRIDSMART representatives Tim Kinnon and Michelle Glossholz, proudly presented Bingochea and other Phoenix representatives their prize. Scott Clark of Clark Transportation Solutions, a long-time McCain distributor, and Scott Evans of Eberle Designs Inc., a valued McCain partner, were also in attendance to celebrate the momentous occasion.

McCain and GRIDSMART will continue to work with the city to provide essential training and configuration of the cabinet equipped with McCain’s ATC eX NEMA controller and Omni eX intersection control software, and the GRIDSMART System, including the company’s iconic Bell Camera and GS2 Processor.
