The Transport Technology Forum (TTF) is supporting an update of an important document which assists local authorities in the UK in their management of the maintenance of electronic traffic control systems.
The Management of Electronic Traffic Equipment Code of Practice was written and published by the Roads Liaison Group in 2011. Since then, the amount, and type of electronic equipment at the roadside has changed significantly, and with the installation of this new technology, the Roads Liaison Group has recognised the code needs review and amendment.
Funding for refurbishment programs varies greatly from authority to authority, with some operating an effective maintenance regime, replacing equipment on a rolling program, while other authorities do not have a replacement program in place at all. The Code is designed to assist in development and management of maintenance program to ensure that the available funding is spent effectively.
The work will be led by Gafoor Din FIHE, service manager for Traffic Control and Information Systems at Warwickshire County Council, who is working with leading traffic signals consultant Steve George.
They are seeking volunteers from industry, local authorities and consultancies who would like to be involved in updating this Code of Practice, with the project receiving vital funding from the Transport Technology Forum.
The tasks will involve reviewing the whole Code of Practice in order to determine what can be removed because it is no longer recommended, what current practice needs updated, and what new technology needs to be added. It is expected that the new Code of Practice will be integrated into MfSS – the Department for Transport’s Manual for Smart Streets.
