#ITSDubai2024: Sinelec showcases open-road tolling solutions

Operators are now seeking out innovative open road tolling (ORT) solutions which improve traffic flow while also ensuring accuracy, security and performance remain a priority. To find out more visit H7-E16-B at the ITS World Congress in Dubai

In a world focused on safety, reducing traffic disruption and minimizing environmental impact, multi-lane free flow (MLFF) systems — also known as open road tolling (ORT) which allow tolls to be paid without stopping or slowing down at barriers — are increasingly in demand. By using simpler structures for housing the devices and maintenance operations, both land occupation and pollution related to vehicle emissions are reduced as vehicles no longer need to slow down, improving traffic flow.

Data is key

Sinelec has designed and developed S*Gate, a flexible and modular ORT solution, easily adaptable to the needs of its customers and the markets in which they operate. Using AI and real-time analysis of combined video streams for 3D tracking of vehicle trajectories, S*Gate guarantees high levels of accuracy and detection of passing vehicles regardless of environmental factors.

S*GATE encapsulates the data collected by the devices into a digital fingerprint which attributed to the vehicle. This data consists of the shape, size and volume, front and rear licence plate, possible axle number read from different sides of the vehicle including identification of any raised axle and twin wheels, make, model colour and tag.

The fingerprint, which correlates with a precise location, date and time from the GNSS position data, is then transferred to a customized ‘data lake’ through an encrypted protocol for further processing. The data correlation algorithm that constitutes the toll transaction is also obtained from a mix of application logic, machine learning models and artificial intelligence to minimize the need for back-office correction interventions.

Tailored solutions

With decades of experience in electronic tolling, Sinelec ensures the highest levels of innovation are applied to mobility, working alongside customers to design a tailor-made solution.

In Italy, Sinelec worked with operators for the implementation of ORT system portals for the A33 Asti-Cuneo motorway. The operator requested the supply of a tolling system that met security and privacy standards, and included both the peripheral system and the central management, operational and commercial back-office systems. In addition to those units, Sinelec implemented the toll payment portal for users with new forms of cashless payment, helping the concessionaire in the digital transformation of its processes.Similarly, Sinelec collaborated with Ecorodovias, one of the most important motorway operators in  Brazil, and customized S*Gate for two pilot projects — Ecopistas/São Paulo in collaboration with ARTESP (Agência de Transporte do Estado de São Paulo) and another in Ecoponte/Rio de Janeiro with ANTT (Agencia Nacional de Transportes Terrestres). Sinelec built the first multi-lane free-flow portals for the Econoroeste concessionaire in the north-east of the state of São Paulo to replace traditional toll barriers in the cities of Itapolis and Jaboticabal.
