SRL has a wide range of solar-powered mobile ITS

SRL Traffic Systems has become the first mobile intelligent transport system (ITS) manufacturer to have its greenhouse gas emissions-reduction target validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), a leading global corporate climate action organisation.

The SBTi has validated SRL’s near-term target to reduce absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by at least 42% by 2030 against a 2023 base year. Scope 1 emissions arise from SRL’s direct energy consumption, while Scope 2 covers indirect emissions from purchased electricity. SRL has also committed to measure and reduce its Scope 3 emissions that occur indirectly throughout its value chain.

The SBTi helps organisations combat climate change by developing science-based standards for emissions reduction. The SBTi, in collaboration with major international sustainability bodies including the United Nations Global Compact and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), works to validate corporate targets to ensure alignment with global climate goals.

As one of Europe’s largest manufacturers and suppliers of mobile ITS solutions for the traffic management, construction, utilities and events sectors, SRL is focusing on vehicle emissions, which account for 87% of its carbon emissions.

SRL was among the first to introduce solar technology for mobile traffic signals, with its SolarLight temporary lights operating on extended 365-day battery exchange cycles, significantly reducing vehicular and energy-related emissions. The company is also investing in advanced battery technology, extending the operational lifespan of certain portable signals from one week to a month, further minimising its environmental impact.

SRL is targeting a 50% reduction in fleet emissions through the deployment of Samsara, a system that monitors and guides driver behaviour to optimise fuel efficiency. The company is also piloting electric vehicles and exploring hydrotreated vegetable oil biodiesel, which could reduce emissions by up to 90% in applicable vehicles.
CEO Statement

“Our SBTi validation affirms our dedication to helping to combat climate change by aligning our operations with global science-based targets and highlights our commitment to providing customers with increasingly sustainable mobile ITS solutions,” says SRL’s chief executive officer, Mark Eburne.
