Cohda Wireless has announced that its On-Board Unit (OBU) has received E1 certification, marking a key step toward integration into public transport fleets and approval as an OEM Aftermarket Accessory throughout Europe.

The E1 certification, granted by Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), confirms that Cohda’s V2X technology complies with the stringent safety and regulatory requirements set by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).

As part of the certification process, the OBU underwent rigorous testing under the ECE R10 and ECE R118 standards. ECE R10 ensures electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), critical for operation in dense urban environments with high levels of electronic interference. Meanwhile, ECE R118 certifies the fire resistance of materials used in the vehicle’s interior, an essential standard for public transport vehicles like buses and trams.

“These approvals are a significant milestone in ensuring that our V2X technology can be incorporated into public transport fleets and acquired as an approved OEM Aftermarket Accessory,” said Bernd Luebben, VP of business development at Cohda Wireless.

The approval enables Cohda’s OBU to carry the E1 mark, validating its suitability for deployment across a wide range of public and private sector mobility applications.

“Buses, trams, and other forms of road-based public transport play a critical role in the world of connected mobility, and our world-leading OBU can be deployed to enable advanced V2X applications, having met the required safety and efficiency standards,” added Luebben.

Cohda Wireless’ OBU already carries several global certifications, including EC, UKCA, FCC, ISED, and KC, allowing for seamless international deployment.

Cohda Wireless, which operates across Europe, the USA, and China, specializes in connected vehicle software and V2X technologies that enable vehicles to communicate with infrastructure, other vehicles, and pedestrians. Cohda partners with OEMs, Tier 1 suppliers, and smart city developers to provide scalable solutions for safer, more efficient transport networks.
