Axis launches two pan-tilt-roll-zoom dome cameras and new video compression technology

One of Europe’s leaders in network video and camera systems has introduced two new fixed dome units and new video compression technology that offer more storage and bandwidth savings in surveillance applications.

Swedish company Axis Communications has launched the Q36 Network Camera Series, which offers exceptional image quality with its 1/2-inch (12.7mm) sensors and high-performance image processing. The series’s unique remote pan-tilt-roll-zoom (PTRZ) capability greatly reduces installation time and allows for efficient readjustment later on. The new fixed domes are ideally suited for city and parking facility surveillance, transportation, government and critical infrastructure installations. The new Q3615-VE and Q3617-VE models also feature the company’s Lightfinder and Wide Dynamic Range (WDR) – Forensic Capture technologies that offer high image quality, particularly in challenging lighting conditions, such as in tunnels or underground car parks. The cameras are suitable for harsh environments, featuring electronic image stabilization, IK10 vandal resistance, weather protection and shock detection.

The Q3615-VE model offers HDTV 1080p video at frame rates up to 30fps with WDR enabled and up to 60fps with WDR disabled. The Q3617-VE camera offers Quad HD or 4-megapixel resolution at frame rates up to 30fps with WDR enabled and 6-megapixel resolution at up to 20fps with WDR disabled. The Lightfinder and Wide Dynamic Range (WDR) – Forensic Capture technologies allow the cameras to capture color video in the dark and to master challenging light conditions, such as when sunlight creates both very bright zones as well as very dark shadow areas. The Q36 Series is supported by the industry’s largest base of video management software through the Axis Application Development Partner (ADP) Program and Axis Camera Station. Third-party video analytics applications can be installed on the cameras via Axis Camera Application Platform and ONVIF support allows for easy integration into existing video surveillance systems.

The new cameras also feature the latest version of Axis’s Zipstream technology, which lowers bandwidth and storage consumption by an average of 50% or more without sacrificing important image details. The latest enhancement of the Zipstream technology now offers even more storage and bandwidth savings in video surveillance applications without compromising on important image details. It is fully compatible with the widely adopted H.264 video compression standard. The upgraded Zipstream technology instantly adapts to changes in the scene and is dynamically adjusting the frame rate, which significantly reduces storage and bandwidth requirements, without compromising important forensic image details. During a period without any activity in a completely static scene, the frame rate decreases to almost zero. The camera instantly returns to 30fps when movement of objects or people is detected.

“Ensuring that important image details are captured at all times is what really counts for our customers. Being able to reduce the bitrate to almost zero when there is no activity means you get everything you need, with less of what you don’t,” noted Axis CTO Johan Paulsson. “We have seen particularly strong demand for even further reduction of bandwidth and storage consumption for continuous recording of scenes with changing activity levels.”
