TomTom to supply Green Way Systems with European traffic data

German supplier of traffic information and guidance equipment Green Way Systems has selected TomTom to provide its live and historical European traffic data, which will power its product portfolio.

Green Way will use TomTom’s data to provide traffic jam and congestion warnings, hazard alerts, and traffic routing recommendations, displayed on the company’s range of variable message signs (VMS). Green Way offers a series of solutions through its Traffic Safe platform, including information on VMS warning motorists of possible hazardous situations, traffic volume, travel times, or diversion recommendations.

TomTom maintains a database of trillions of data points collected from hundreds of millions of connected devices, and this, coupled with its live traffic views, provides a comprehensive dataset to help transportation professionals better manage traffic flows, and enabling people to save time, fuel and reduce emissions.

“We turned to TomTom because highways managers monitor traffic situations on their networks with a high level of detail and need to be proactive in the management of traffic incidents,” explained Matthias Müller, Green Way’s managing director. “Traffic managers and consumers alike will benefit from our information sharing, based on accurate and reliable TomTom data.”

Anders Truelsen, managing director of TomTom’s licensing business, commented, “With our in-depth knowledge of historical and live traffic conditions, we are transforming mobility across the world. By harnessing the extent and value of our traffic data, Green Way Systems is better enabled to inform transportation officials and the driving public of travel conditions ahead.”

TomTom has also announced that weekly global map database updates are now available for its business customers. Using its MultiNet-R relational exchange format that delivers easy to compile maps, the new weekly updates result in the most up-to-date maps available from the company, four times faster than was previously available. The industry norm for global automotive-grade maps is quarterly releases; TomTom moved beyond this in 2016 with monthly updates, and has now taken a step further by introducing updates every seven days.

TomTom board member Alain de Taeye noted, “Being able to provide weekly updates to our customers is a very important achievement, one that is a direct result of our unique transactional mapmaking platform. By delivering weekly updates, we are enabling our customers to increase the quality of their applications by having more up-to-date data. It is also an important step in continuously providing the quality required to support future use cases, most notably autonomous driving.”
