Sensys Gatso wins new contracts in Sweden and the USA

The world’s largest supplier of traffic enforcement equipment, the Sensys Gatso Group, has been awarded speed and red-light camera systems contracts in the USA and Sweden.

Through its North American subsidiary, Sensys Gatso USA, the company has received a contract from the City of Pawtucket in Rhode Island for red-light school zone speed enforcement camera systems valued at approximately US$3.5m (SKr32m) over a five-year term.

With an estimated current population of 72,000, Pawtucket is the fourth-largest city in the state and its Mayor, along with the Office of Procurement, were the driving forces behind getting the program approved with stakeholders and city council members.

The managed services photo enforcement program is expected to commence in January 2019, with the school zone cameras enforcing speed limits during specific hours of operation, based on school schedules. In 2016, the Automated School Zone Speed Enforcement System Act was passed in Rhode Island, permitting municipalities to install the cameras within a quarter-mile of any type of school in the state. The red-light cameras will be placed at intersections where traffic volumes and crash statistics warrant their implementation.

Sensys Gatso wins new contracts in Sweden and the USA“We are pleased to be partnering with the City of Pawtucket to help improve the overall safety of children in school zones,” commented Andrew Noble, president of Sensys Gatso USA. “This particular use of enforcement cameras and the hard work of the legislators in Rhode Island, in getting such laws passed, should be commended.”

In its home country, the Sensys Gatso Group has received a new order worth US$5.6m (SKr50m) from the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket). The order covers systems and cabinets for traffic safety cameras to be installed at new locations across the country. Installation and commissioning of the traffic safety cameras are not included in this order and will be ordered separately as the roll-out plan progresses. Deliveries will start in the second half of 2019 and be finalized during 2020.

The more than 1,700 speed and red-light traffic safety cameras already installed across Sweden are an important part of the implementation of Trafikverket’s ‘Vision Zero’ policy. They are estimated to contribute to saving 20-30 lives per year and reducing the number of seriously injured people by 70 per year. The Swedish Transport Administration originally signed a contract with Sensys Gatso covering deliveries of traffic safety systems, in July 2013, and the new order has been placed in accordance with that agreement.

Jörgen Andersson, general manager of Sensys Gatso Sweden AB, said, “We are particularly proud we have been given the opportunity to further contribute to the execution of Trafikverket’s Vison Zero program. We see this as a proof of our excellent partnership.”
