The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is expanding and updating its network of truck weigh stations in order to improve highway safety for all road users and provide data for future planning exercises.
The Canadian company, International Road Dynamics (IRD) has received a US$4.6m contract from PennDOT for the installation, calibration and maintenance of weigh-in-motion (WIM) systems across the state.
The contract has an initial term of two years, and provides an option for renewal for up to three additional years. PennDOT currently has 38 active IRD-supplied WIM systems that are covered under this agreement. Nine of these systems also include overview camera systems.
Data collection and planning site locations comprise in-road instrumentation and IRD’s iSINC WIM electronics and software. Historical data collected from these sites is used to develop daily and seasonal factors, as well as to identify changes in traffic patterns. Real-time data is used to enhance safety and assist the state police with enforcement activities, resulting in reduced roadway damage and increased preservation of pavement and infrastructure.
The iSINC electronics and software form the core of IRD’s traffic and truck WIM systems. Out of the box, iSINC performs a broad range of intelligent transportation system (ITS) functions, from data collection and web-based traffic monitoring, to weigh-station automation. IRD can configure the iSINC to control LPR (license plate recognition) cameras, USDOT readers, message signs, AVI (automatic vehicle identification), dimension sensors and WIM scales. The iSINC system features: real-time operation and integration; powerful multi-tasking software; and hardened electronics and weatherproof enclosures. The iSINC system can be used for: virtual weigh stations; CVISN preclearance systems; traffic data collection; weight enforcement using WIM and static scales; border crossing and bridge monitoring; and other ITS applications.
