Brisa’s A-to-Be mobility brand wins award for transatlantic trade successes

Portuguese toll road operator and parking and transportation systems technology supplier Brisa has won an ‘AmCham Tributes’ award from the American Chamber of Commerce in Portugal for its new A-to-Be mobility brand.

The American Chamber of Commerce in Portugal presents its annual AmCham Tributes awards to honor and distinguish companies that have contributed significantly to enhance the business and commercial relationship between Portugal and the USA. A-to-Be was awarded this year’s tribute for its recent deliveries and achievements in the US market. The winners were officially announced at a formal event chaired by the Portuguese President, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, and the US Ambassador to Portugal, George Glass, who congratulated the companies for their strong investments made in the USA, recognizing “the efforts to enhance prosperity on both sides of the Atlantic”.

A-to-Be is Brisa’s newest commercial brand, acting as the group’s technology company for the expanding mobility market, with the USA one of its top targets. The company has a long and continuous relation with the USA, having founded Brisa Innovation in the country to establish a business network in the fields of mobility and intelligent transportation systems (ITS).

At the same time, A-to-Be conducted pilot projects and new concept demonstrations for vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication in the USA, years in advance of the mainstream move toward connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs), anticipating that the country would be a leader for major breakthroughs in the mobility and vehicle connectivity markets.

Recent projects in the USA for the new A-to-Be mobility brand include:

• Northwest Parkway – a US$1.2m contract, in Denver, Colorado, allowing the application of new tolling technology solutions for improved operational efficiency, achieving 35% decrease in operational costs, promoting environmental and sustainable business goals;

• Southern Connector – a US$3m contract in Greenville, South Carolina, with local companies’ involvement a key factor, partnering with maintenance and electronics suppliers, giving them training and improving their capabilities;

• Illinois Tollway – a US$33.2m contract won in a 2016 tender for automated tolling systems in Chicago, Illinois; included the supply, installation, and warranty services for up to 270 lanes, with the strategy of partnering with local companies Elite and SPAAN Tech, a key factor in providing manufacturing, implementation and maintenance operations for A-to-Be’s technology;

• Washington State – a contract in partnership with IMS Intellimec for the state’s Road Usage Charge (RUC) pilot deployment, using A-to-Be’s MoveBeyond back-office platform, where following a six-month period of implementation, the one-year operation contract is anticipated to go-live during the first quarter of 2018.
