The Swedish division of the Swarco international traffic and parking technology group has deployed an integrated smart parking system at Scandinavia’s third busiest airport, Stockholm Arlanda, in order to reduce congestion for the 25 million travelers that use it each year.
The airport recently opened its new P1 long-term parking facility, which has 1,561 paved parking spots equipped with Swarco’s latest parking technology. Client for the project was the airport operator, Swedavia, which aimed to offer travelers a high-class experience before and after their journey, and focused on comfort, the environment and safety when choosing the P1’s parking system.
The new facility, which is located south of the airport next to the E4 highway, is fully paved and has been equipped with Swarco sensors at all of its parking spots to detect whether each space is occupied or available.
The available parking spots are then indicated on Swarco’s real-time status information screens, which are strategically positioned in the parking area to guide visitors to an available spot. The system reduces the need for visitors to drive around the facility looking for a vacant spot, reducing vehicle emissions and making their visit faster and more convenient.
Swarco has also supplied an automatic barrier system from its Skidata division at the entrance and exit gates, which are integrated with an automatic license plate recognition system (ALPR). The barrier system, which is also used for payment at time of exit, and linked to Swarco’s back-office payment platform, are equipped with LED decor lighting for better visibility night or day, under all climatic conditions.
The LED lighting increases both visibility and safety at the entrances and exits, and is used in combination with the facility’s security surveillance cameras. The Skidata payment machines are able to accept, cash, cards, e-tickets, or RFID proximity tags for regular users.
Swarco has also supplied an intercom system for visitors that need assistance, allowing them to call Swedavia’s Central Customer Service Center, which is staffed with personnel around the clock. Swarco’s service level agreement with the operator means that the company is available to provide assistance to Swedavia when needed, and is available to make service calls to the airport around the clock.
