Econolite to distribute Pelco’s IntelliCross pedestrian crossing system

Traffic management equipment manufacturer Econolite has reached an exclusive distributor agreement with Pelco Products Inc. and will immediately begin distributing Pelco’s IntelliCross advanced pedestrian crossing product line in select regions of the Western USA.

Oklahoma-based Pelco’s IntelliCross Advanced Pedestrian System (APS) is future-proofed and designed to be one of the most advanced accessible pedestrian signal systems available.

An APS is defined as a device that communicates pedestrian timing information in a non-visual format, such as audible tone, verbal messages, and/or vibrating surfaces, allowing people with disabilities, such as those with visual impairments, to be able to cross the road safely.

The IntelliCross APS is currently the only system that is easily field upgradable to central control. With just the addition of a Communications Interface Unit (CIU) to cabinet power, intersections without pushbutton wiring can use patented Power Line Communications (PLC) to eliminate the need for wiring from the cabinet to the button.

IntelliCross allows engineers to make arrow adjustment on the fly, and by not having to configure the system in the shop, and by installing it only on the signal pole, hours of set up time can be saved.

Pelco has also engineered the system to work with off-the-shelf IntelliCross push buttons, with unique memory technology that allows button replacement in one sequence. Compatible with the company’s range of traffic control equipment, Econolite now will be the exclusive distributor for Pelco IntelliCross in Alaska, Arizona, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, and select counties in California. Econolite Canada is already a distributor of IntelliCross north of the border.

“We provide the only complete solution for safely navigating pedestrians through North American intersections,” said Pelco’s IntelliCross manager, Kevin Hanke. “Our IntelliCross product line is the result of years of research, input and design, resulting in the first technologically advanced pedestrian crossing product. We are excited to partner with Econolite to help enhance the safety of some of the most vulnerable intersection users.”

Econolite’s VP of sales, Mark Nogaki, commented, “The IntelliCross APS system complements our leading-edge ITS suite of solutions. IntelliCross provides transportation agencies with the ability to convert pre-timed intersections to fully actuated.

“In addition, its wireless button configuration enables the ability to configure all the buttons at one time using a computer. These features combined with our ITS offerings will help enhance efficiency and safety for pedestrians.”
