Iteris awarded new contract for expanded role in California’s I-405 Improvement Project

One of the USA’s leading suppliers of applied informatics systems for the transportation industry, Iteris Inc., has been awarded a new US$2.4m contract by the OC 405 Partners consortium for integration and maintenance of the technology infrastructure in support of the I-405 Improvement Project in Southern California.

The US$1.9bn I-405 Improvement Project is the largest-scale project ever undertaken by the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA), with the scheme being developed in cooperation with the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans).

The project will improve 16 miles (25.7km) of I-405 between the SR-73 freeway in Costa Mesa and I-605 near the Los Angeles County line. The project includes adding one regular lane in each direction between Euclid Street and I-605, and making improvements to freeway entrances, exits and bridges.

In addition, the project will add the variably-tolled 405 Express Lanes, incorporating the existing carpool lanes and a new lane in each direction between SR-73 and I-605. The multi-year improvement project will be complete in 2023.

OC 405 Partners is the Joint Venture of OHL USA Inc. (OHL) and Astaldi Construction Corporation (Astaldi), in conjunction with its exclusive subcontractors, Myers and Sons Construction and All American Asphalt.

The consortium will deliver the I-405 Improvement Project for OCTA, with the scheme intended to shorten commute times significantly for the 370,000 drivers that use the heavily-congested route on a daily basis. The new agreement will bring Iteris’s total involvement to date on the project to US$7.9m, and broadens the company’s scope to include the integration and maintenance of technology infrastructure to support the entire construction process.

Iteris will now be responsible for the freeway intelligent transportation system (ITS) and Express Lane infrastructure design, temporary ITS infrastructure for use during construction, development of the project traffic management plan, and traffic signal design at 42 intersections throughout the corridor.

Iteris’s initial US$5.5m contract with OC 405 Partners focused on the main infrastructure design work, which started in March 2017, and will continue through 2018. The newly awarded US$2.4m contract, which has a 12-month term from date of execution, focuses on the deployment of the temporary ITS infrastructure for use during the construction period.

Iteris is currently leading numerous ITS design and communication infrastructure projects across the USA, enabling smarter mobility systems. The company’s Transportation Systems business unit provides advanced design, real-time data analytics, and actionable informatics, to safely improve mobility within communities, and helping prepare roadways for future widespread introduction of connected and autonomous vehicles.

“The I-405 Improvement Project is one of the most important transportation initiatives to impact southern California for some time, and it will make roads significantly safer and more efficient for residents and commuters,” noted Steven Bradley, associate vice president for transportation systems at Iteris. “We are excited to begin a new phase of the project to support safe mobility during construction.”
