German speed camera manufacturer Jenoptik has been cooperating with its local partner, the First Joint Group, to deliver and install additional stationary radar-based speed enforcement systems to further improve traffic safety in Kuwait.
Jenoptik has been successfully deploying traffic safety technology in the Middle East for decades, with systems installed in Oman, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Lebanon, and the United Arab Emirates. The company has also been involved in a variety of traffic safety projects in Kuwait since 2000.
The latest order from the country’s Ministry of Interior is valued in the mid-single-digit million euro range and was secured after an extended tendering process. The contract comprises 60 of the design-award winning TraffiTower type 2.0 camera housings, as well as 40 TraffiStar SR390 radar-based speed measurement systems along, with 120 external flash units. The delivery and installation was completed in the first quarter of 2017 and the equipment has now ‘gone live’.
The company’s TraffiStar SR390 units provide simultaneous speed and red light enforcement over four lanes at traffic lights, or can be used to monitor speed only over six lanes. The SR390 can be used with optional xenon and/or LED infrared flash units, and the 3D radar measurement system makes a precise distinction between cars and trucks, and determines exactly which lanes they are in.
It is even able to assign different speed limits to individual lanes or vehicle classes. If required, the TraffiStar SR390 records registration plates using an inbuilt ALPR (automatic license plate recognition) system, which can be immediately compared with a ‘blacklist’ or wanted list. The system can also operate a ‘whitelist’ for police, emergency service or transit vehicles, so no action is taken against accredited speed or lane violations.
Jenoptik’s Traffic Solutions division has already successfully supplied numerous stationary and mobile radar systems for speed monitoring, as well as red-light monitoring systems, to Kuwait as part of its road safety policies. Red light monitoring takes place using a single radar sensor with innovative Robot 3D tracking technology. Violations are documented at resolutions of up to 11MP and an optional sequential or video camera records events before and after the violation.
