I-95 Corridor Coalition to host connected and automated vehicle conference

The I-95 Corridor Coalition, a partnership of 100+ transportation and related public agencies, is planning a conference on connected and automated vehicles (CAVs), specifically designed to support public agencies in addressing and accelerating the security, safety and operational issues related to the new technologies within their jurisdictions, and in coordination with neighboring jurisdictions.

The conference, ‘Connected and Automated Vehicles: What Public Agencies Need to Know’, will take place on June 21-22, at the Maritime Institute Conference Center in Linthicum (near BWI Airport), Maryland, USA. The goal of the conference is to illuminate and begin a discussion on how these vehicles will impact the Coalition members, and what actions can be taken to mitigate risk and maximize benefits. This conference will build on the conversation on state policy and regulatory needs for autonomous vehicles taking place at the ‘Automated Vehicle Policy and Regulation: A State Perspective’ workshop hosted by the University of Maryland’s National Transportation Center on May 18. Its scope includes connected and automated vehicle technologies, as well as car and vehicle sharing services, and how they will impact operations, safety and overall DOT practice.

The I-95 Corridor Coalition conference’s objectives are:

• Based on planned and current infrastructure, and identify common issues and concerns in the Coalition footprint that will need to be addressed;

• Identify unexplored benefits to connected vehicles;

• Identify issues and possible solutions regarding CAVs from a regional basis;

• Create a framework to address issues of CAVs during a significant event;

• Determine next steps for pursuit by I-95 Coalition Committees.

The target audience for this conference spans the gamut of all disciplines, levels, and agencies which are involved in infrastructure, policy, planning, systems, and safety/security for all travel modes, including automobiles, transit, commercial vehicles and freight. The sessions will apply particularly to senior level government officials, operations and maintenance personnel, incident management and on-scene responders, planners, federal agency personnel, and all state/regional/local government agency personnel.

Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are available for conference attendees completing a post-conference assessment. The event is being sponsored by the USA’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), Inrix, and the Jacobs and CH2M engineering and infrastructure consultancies.

Speakers will include: senior Department of Transportation (DOT) leaders from the Coalition’s member states, and representatives from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), USDOT’s ITS JPO, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators, Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), Auto Alliance Association, North American Council for Freight Efficiency, the US Department of Homeland Security (USDHS), and several leading universities and research institutes.
