Moxa’s new Ethernet switch extends networks over legacy copper wiring

One of the leading providers of network infrastructure equipment for connectivity to the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) has introduced a new switch that allows transportation agencies to use existing copper wiring to extend their Ethernet networks.

Moxa has launched the IEX-408E-2VDSL2 industrial Ethernet extender switch to address the growing networking extension requirements driven by the move towards the IIoT. The unit is an ideal solution for reducing the cost of establishing new network cable installations using existing twisted-pair copper wiring to extend copper cable networks beyond the conventional distance limitations imposed by the Ethernet protocol.

The product enables agencies to use existing cables to upgrade and extend their networks quickly, as well as reduce costs, making it ideally suited to intelligent transportation systems (ITS), where legacy copper infrastructure is already in place. The IIoT trend has driven many businesses to upgrade their existing networks to IP-based (Internet Protocol) systems for centralized analysis and management. In the transportation industry, many road operators are now upgrading their traffic signal control systems and integrating CCTV surveillance into the same network, in order to make roads safer and increase efficiency.

The IEX-408E-2VDSL2 supports two VDSL2 ports and 6 Ethernet ports for long distance data transmission over twisted-pair copper wiring, which provides users with greater flexibility for linking devices together over a considerable range. The product can easily be linked in series to form a long distance multi-drop configuration, with one IEX-408E-2VDSL2 unit located at each drop-point. Adjacent drop points can be separated theoretically by up to 1.8 miles (3km), with a transmission speed of 1Mbps achieved using a VDSL2 connection, and a transmission speed of 100Mbps can be theoretically achieved over a connection distance of 984ft (300m).

The IEX-408E-2VDSL2 also supports three additional features: an automatic CO/CPE negotiation function for easy plug-n-play deployment; Moxa’s Turbo Ring, Turbo Chain redundancy protocols for millisecond recovery and bypass function for multiple failures; and live status monitoring via LED indicators and MXview industrial network management software. Ethernet redundancy is also provided by RSTP/ STP, and MSTP, and a state-of-the-art controllable bypass solution on the DSL ports increases the system reliability and availability of networks.

“Road operators are not only concerned about the cost, but also face time constraints in order to minimize the interference to road users,” noted Jack Lin, product manager for Moxa’s industrial Ethernet switches. “Our IEX-408E-2VDSL2 Ethernet extender switch allows users to leverage legacy systems over twisted-pair copper wiring, which significantly reduces the project time and costs. As industries move towards the IIoT, the IEX-408E-2VDSL2 is an ideal solution to build reliable and cost-effective network infrastructure.”
