The worldwide transportation association that represents toll facility owners, operators and the businesses that serve them, the International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association (IBTTA), has announced the five tolling agencies and a private firm that have won its annual awards.

The prestigious 2016 IBTTA National Toll Excellence Awards have gone to organizations that have demonstrated outstanding performance in their innovative customer service, social responsibility, technology solutions, and toll operations, engineering and maintenance, as well as successful solutions to administration and finance issues. The awards will be presented on Monday, September 12, 2016, during IBTTA’s 84th Annual Meeting and Exhibition that runs from September 11-14 in Denver, Colorado. One recipient will also will be honored with the coveted President’s Award for Excellence during the awards ceremony; the ‘victor ludorum’ of the tolling industry.

Every year, the IBTTA honors its leading members that are implementing state-of-the-art, innovative user-based transportation financing solutions to address the critical infrastructure challenges of the 21st Century. The 2016 honorees and their winning projects are:

• Administration & Finance – Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise for the I-4 Connector Project (pictured above)

• Customer Service & Marketing Outreach – North Carolina Turnpike Authority for Multi-Agency Interoperability

• Social Responsibility – The Foothill/Eastern Transportation Corridor for its State Route 241 Wildlife Safety Fence Improvement Project

• Technology – Harris County Toll Road Authority for the Prohibited Vehicle Rapid Alert System (RAS)

• Toll Operations, Maintenance & Engineering – Central Florida Expressway Authority for its Wrong-Way Driving Pilot Program (right)

• Private Sector Innovation – CDM Smith for development of the National Interstate Tolling Analysis Tool

“These agencies represent the leading edge of excellence, innovation and achievement in the tolling industry,” said Earl J ‘Buddy’ Croft III, IBTTA president and executive director for the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority. “As toll roads across the USA continue to expand and grow ever more sophisticated, we expect these awards to become even more competitive.”

Patrick D Jones, executive director and CEO of the IBTTA, said, “This year’s submissions demonstrated a particularly high level of innovation, making the final decision for the 2016 President’s Award for Excellence especially difficult. These honorees represent just a handful of great examples of projects that put into action new ideas and emerging practices throughout our industry. Our honorees have set new benchmarks that all toll agencies can use as a basis for future improvements and innovation.”
