Vizzion reveals new navigation concept using traffic and weather camera feeds

At this month’s AutoMobility LA show, one of the leading suppliers of camera-fed traffic and weather content will be demonstrating a new system that uses live imagery to help drivers avoid traffic congestion and dangerous road conditions.

Canadian company Vizzion is the leading traffic camera supplier for traffic and weather applications and operations centers. Through partnerships with over 150 different transport agencies worldwide, the Vancouver-based company offers live feeds from over 43,000 roadside cameras in 31 countries across North America, Europe, Asia, Australasia, and key markets in South America and Africa.

Vizzion’s traffic camera content is currently used by auto makers, traffic data companies, websites, apps, fleets, and broadcasters, to deliver live and comprehensive traffic and weather views to their customers. The company has now released a concept video demonstrating how typical driving scenarios are improved by the integration of live traffic camera imagery into vehicle navigation systems.

Vizzion’s new video demonstrates four different driving scenarios where live traffic camera imagery can help drivers avoid traffic congestion and dangerous road conditions. The concept video begins at the pre-trip planning stage. When the vehicle is powered on, the nearest traffic camera images are automatically displayed to give the driver a visual preview of how local traffic volumes and weather conditions might affect their journey. After a driver inputs a destination, navigation systems typically offer a preferred route and secondary route option. In Vizzion’s next scenario, drivers can preview their trip by scrolling through the cameras along each route in order to choose the safest and most efficient option. Traffic cameras allow drivers to see and avoid traffic, construction, accidents, police incidents, closed lanes, snow, flooding, fog, debris on roads, and other hazards or delays.

In the video’s third scenario, the cameras are cleared away to limit distractions while the vehicle is in motion. When the vehicle comes safely to a stop in heavy traffic, cameras up ahead are automatically displayed to show the cause of delays and ease driver frustration. When a driver understands the reason for delays, they can make smarter decisions such as choosing to wait out traffic congestion or find an alternative route because of a severe incident. By allowing drivers to see live traffic camera imagery, the last scenario in the video demonstrates how auto makers, navigation suppliers, and traffic data companies can crowdsource what drivers see. This is valuable incident information that can be supplied to other vehicles, fleets, data companies, or transportation agencies.

Vizzion will be exhibiting the concept this week at AutoMobility LA, a merger of the Los Angeles Auto Show Press & Trade Days and Connected Car Expo, which takes place at the LA Convention Center, in California, on November 14-17. Automotive industry professionals are invited to meet with Vizzion representatives and see the traffic camera service in action.
