ERTICO – ITS Europe appoints new CEO

ERTICO – ITS Europe, the continent’s primary organization for the promotion of intelligent transportation systems, has appointed a new chief executive officer.

ERTICO, the public-private partnership of 120 organizations facilitating the deployment of ITS technologies in Europe, has publicly announced the appointment of the former director general of the International Automobile Federation’s (FIA) Region I (Europe), Jacob Bangsgaard (above, right), as its new chief executive officer, which is effective from January 1. Bangsgaard succeeds Hermann Meyer, who has been CEO at ERTICO since February 2008.

Bangsgaard is a Danish national with a university background in international economics and 25 years of experience working in Brussels on transport and mobility issues. He has been director general of the FIA’s Region I since 2010. Bangsgaard is also the president of the MaaS (Mobility-as-a-Service) Alliance and was a member of the ERTICO Supervisory Board from 2012. Bangsgaard is known for having outstanding competence and has proven leadership in all aspects of Intelligent Transport Systems, especially concerning user aspects and needs.

ERTICO – ITS Europe is advocating and actively working on the deployment of ITS technologies and services through a wide range of activities, including projects, EU programs, interest groups, events, conferences, exhibitions and congresses. The ERTICO work program focuses on initiatives to improve road safety, security and network efficiency, while taking into account measures to reduce environmental impact. Currently the ERTICO partnership is working on five programs:

• Connected & Automated Driving;

• ITS for Urban Mobility;

• ITS Freight Transport & Logistics;

• eMobility;

• Emergency Call systems.

Each program has identified activities according to short, mid and long term goals. In addition, an emphasis is given to six different enablers, as the ERTICO Partnership acknowledges that technology development does not lead to implementation alone. The organization recognizes that interoperability, policy, organizational, financing, and the international aspects also need to be taken into account.

ERTICO’s chairman, Cees De Wijs (right), said, “It is with great pleasure that I announce Jacob Bangsgaard as the new CEO of ERTICO. His strong track record of success as director general at the FIA Foundation made him the best candidate for the role.

“Bangsgaard has demonstrated throughout his career the ability to design and lead strategies. I am most confident that Jacob will further evolve the ERTICO Partnership so that it can continue and further strengthen its mission to achieve effective and appropriate deployment of Intelligent Transport Systems.”

ERTICO’s incoming CEO, Bangsgaard, commented, “I have been involved in ERTICO for many years, as member of the ERTICO Supervisory Board, and am delighted to have been chosen to lead the organization in the next exciting phase of its journey. I look forward to working with the ERTICO Partners to achieve further success in the years to come.”
