Intertraffic Istanbul, taking place this week (May 24-26) commenced with a busy opening ceremony, during which the award-winners were announced.

The opening ceremony began with welcome speeches from Sergan Tigliglu, CEO of UBM EMEA – Intertraffic’s Turkish partner of the event – and Bas Dalm, CEO of organizers at RAI Amsterdam. Other key industry professionals, including Ismail Kartal, Istanbul’s director general of highways; Enver Yilmaz, Mayor of Ordu Metropolitan Municaplity, also thanked the audience for attending the show.

Following the ceremony introduction, the winners of the Intertraffic awards, which recognize the best products from the show’s exhibitors, were announced.

The Parking Systems award was given to Nedap (above) for their Sensit parking sensor system. Sensit measures the occupancy of parking spaces in real time and its benefits, including live monitoring of on-street parking spaces and reducing congestion, were highlighted when it was implemented as part of an ITS in the Turkish city of Izmir in 2016. Speaking exclusively to Traffic Technology Today after winning the award, Ido Wentink, mobility solutions manager at Nedap, said, “We were surprised to have won this award, given the Turkish and international competition that is present at the event. It’s a nice achievement for Nedap and we’re proud to have won.”

Aselsan won the Smart Transportation award. The company’s Multilane Free Flow ETC System for open road tolling collects toll payments without any disturbance to running traffic. “Istanbul has a population of 18 million people and it has a humongous amount of traffic,” said Erkan Dorken (right), head of business line traffic, automation and medical systems at Aselsan. “So it’s important for tolls to be collected automatically, without disturbing traffic. Multilane Free Flow is an important system for Istanbul. It is used numerous times each day and it has an effect on people’s everyday lives. I’m pleased that we have won this award.”

The Municipality Award was won by ISSD Bilisim Elektronic for its Chaostm product. “Veiro is a vehicular counting system that works with our adaptive traffic management system, Chaostm,” explained Enes Yuncu (below), an electronics engineer at ISSD Bilisim Elektronic. “Veiro enables traffic-related data to be sent to Chaostm, which in turn can adaptively manage the traffic. Using Chaostm adaptive traffic signals can be optimized to reduce travel times by up to 40%.” Speaking about the company’s win, Yuncu said, “It’s a pleasure to have won such an award.”

The final Achievement Award was given to Istanbul Buyuk Sehir (Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality) for its services to the public.
