Iteris awarded further FHWA contract for ITS Architecture Program

One of the USA’s leading suppliers of applied informatics systems for the transportation industry, Iteris Inc., has been awarded an indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to provide continued development, evolution and deployment support for the intelligent transportation systems (ITS) reference architecture program.

Under the five-year IDIQ contract, which has a ceiling of US$19.5m, Iteris will support the evolution of the Architecture Reference for Cooperative and Intelligent Transportation (ARC-IT) content to reflect the latest changes in ITS, and connected and automated vehicle (CAV) developments. The program supports statewide and regional ITS planning and deployment to encourage interoperability and CAV preparedness through workshops, training and technical assistance. The new contract will make use of Iteris’ ITS expertise to prepare cities and states for advancements in CAVs, and their eventual integration into transportation networks. Task orders under the contract will include implementation and evolution of the ARC-IT framework, as well as delivery of training programs to public agencies across the USA.

The ARC-IT provides a common framework for planning, defining and integrating intelligent transportation systems. It is a mature product that reflects the contributions of a broad cross-section of the ITS community, including transportation practitioners, systems engineers, system developers, technology specialists, consultants and academia. ARC-IT is a reference architecture that provides a common basis for planners and engineers with differing concerns to conceive, design and implement systems using a common language as a basis for delivering ITS, but does not mandate any particular implementation. ARC-IT includes artifacts that answer concerns relevant to a large variety of stakeholders, and provides tools intended for transportation planners, regional architects and systems engineers to conceive of and develop regional architectures, and scope and develop projects.

Iteris has led the development and evolution of the US Department of Transportation’s ITS architecture reference for over two decades, and initiated the agency’s Connected Vehicle Reference Implementation Architecture in 2012. Combining the two architectures into ARC-IT allows transportation stakeholders to see the linkages between their ITS and CAV technologies, and facilitates integration and interoperability discussions as they plan and implement ITS and CAV projects. Iteris leads an experienced core team of Ice & Associates and Consystec. Additional team members include Trevilon and Booz Allen Hamilton.

“The ITS architecture program has been a vital and constantly evolving reference for ITS, and automated vehicle and connectivity projects since its release over 20 years ago,” said Ramin Massoumi, senior vice president and general manager for transportation systems at Iteris. “We are honored to continue providing the expertise required to support the US Department of Transportation’s efforts to improve safety and mobility.”
