Kapsch TrafficCom strengthens footprint in Latin America with three new contracts

Austrian transportation technology giant Kapsch TrafficCom has expanded its intelligent transportation systems (ITS) footprint in Latin America with the award of three new urban traffic management contracts in Argentina, Panama and Peru.

The new contracts strengthen Kapsch’s position in the Central and South American market, where the company’s urban traffic management systems are already being used in many major or capital cities, including Rio de Janeiro (Brasil), Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic), Quito (Ecuador), and several others.

Kapsch has now been awarded three more major contracts in the region to provide advanced traffic management systems to Buenos Aires (Argentina), Lima (Peru), and Panama City (Panama). The new contracts add up to an accumulated value of approximately €15m (US$17.3m). The Vienna-based ITS technology supplier is expanding both its local footprint in the Latin American region, as well as its expertise in managing dense traffic environments in major cities around the globe.

All three contracts are covered by the company’s EcoTrafiX urban traffic management software platform, however, the cities’ individual requirements all differ in terms of size, scope of work, and aim of completed project.

In Buenos Aires, EcoTrafiX will be used as lead mobility dashboard system, integrating existing urban traffic control and management systems, and aims for better coordination between agencies, as well as better access to transportation information enabling high-quality decisions and planning for the city’s long-term mobility strategy.

Around three million citizens of Buenos Aires and nine million from surrounding areas will benefit from the intelligent traffic management system that will control more than 3,800 intersections, integrating four different technologies, protocols and vendors, 60 variable message signs (VMS), 150 CCTV cameras, and different traffic sensing technologies.

The system will also integrate information from public services such as trains, buses, subway and shared bicycles. The project will be rounded off with the integration of existing third-party ITS and urban traffic control systems, enabling a multi-agency coordination for events management. Real-time data for the police, fire brigades, ambulances or citizen traveler information systems can be included in the future.

Under the contract awarded by the Metropolitan Municipality of Lima, Kapsch will be responsible for engineering, implementation, installation, centralization and maintenance of almost 300 intersections. EcoTrafiX will be used to control more than 5,000 traffic lights, 128 CCTV cameras, 860 vehicle detection devices, 56 miles (90km) of optical fiber, 63 Bluetooth detection system sensors, and 15 VMS.

The system will deliver also advanced functions such as origin-destiny-matrix to better monitor movements and flows of vehicles and improve traffic conditions. All will be controlled via a new videowall and server equipment for the city’s main traffic control center.

In Panama City, Kapsch was commissioned by the Transit and Land Transportation Authority to implement preventive and corrective maintenance of the city’s centralized traffic light control system, which was initially installed in 2006. The contract has a duration over the next 18 months, and the project will use the EcoTrafiX Expert and EcoTrafiX Controller systems.
