Blue-Band’s solar-powered wireless Bluetooth traffic detection suite gets Florida type approval

Central Florida-based green, high-tech company Blue-Band has announced that the Florida Department of Transportation’s (FDOT) Traffic Engineering Research Lab (TERL) has approved the company’s Multi-Use Intelligent Detection Suite for use on the state’s roads.

Blue-Band has developed an integrated suite of products that can detect and transmit vehicle data to meet the needs of the government agencies looking to make their roadways and parking facilities more efficient and safer. The company’s ‘green’ devices are powerful, advanced, and unique, which makes them ideal to enable smarter intersections, freeways, and parking in a single system.

The devices provide cost-effective solutions for smart city initiatives by combining Bluetooth, vehicle detection, and renewable state-of-the-art independent power supply technologies. Blue-Band has developed a line of products and applications that achieves the real-time monitoring and processing of traffic, both pedestrian or vehicular, while simultaneously disseminating traffic information to Bluetooth-enabled device users.

Blue-Band’s Advanced Raised Marker (ARM) is a solar-powered next-generation monitoring device that combines electromagnetic vehicle presence acquisition with anonymized Bluetooth signal detection, with wireless transmission of the captured data.

The dual-detection system is capable of providing customized metrics that use the raw datasets of presence and identification, and together this information enables functions such as parking trends, time-based access control, traffic management, traffic signal control, travel time reporting and general system performance trends.

Also available as a surface-mounted unit, TERL’s type approval specifies the ARM unit must be embedded in the roadway and covered in a carbide friction material.

Blue-Band’s HUB device communicates with all the detectors and performs outputs based on the data reported. The HUB communication and data processing unit uses software that simplifies the configuration process by creating easy fields that produce outputs. The HUB is also able to send data to the Blue-Band wireless contact closure detector card (MDC) that interfaces with all standard NEMA traffic signal cabinets equipped with a standard detector rack. The MDC is able to optimize traffic signal timings through real-time data collected by ARM monitoring units.

The advantage of using Blue-Band devices is their ability to make use of a large existing infrastructure of Bluetooth-enabled devices simultaneously while offering accurate per-vehicle detection in a single hardware unit using renewable energy for long-lasting sustainable power.

“Our technology suite helps make our infrastructure smarter, safer, and more efficient while reducing the cost of ownership and maintenance to accelerate the deployment of an intelligent transportation infrastructure that turns our roadways into ‘smart-ways’, noted Kevin Yorke, Blue-Band’s CEO.

“With our smart devices, transporters will enjoy reduced travel times, increased gas savings, and safer roads that lead to the traveling public getting the best possible travel experience.”
