The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is seeking to fill a Rest Area Attendant position based out of our Mottman Maintenance Facility. In this role, you will be responsible for janitorial services at the Scatter Creek and Maytown Safety Rest Area as well as assisting with general roadway maintenance activities.

The current schedule for this position is Sunday through Wednesday 4:30am to 3:00pm, although the Rest Area Attendant must possess a willingness to work any shift, often for long hours on short notice, including weekends and holidays as needed. This position requires a self-directed individual who takes independent actions to resolve maintenance problems as they occur. Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Rest Area Attendant will:

Perform various janitorial services at highway rest areas, including but not limited to: cleaning, disinfecting, replenishing supplies, sweeping and mopping floors in facilities.
Collect water samples for testing.
Clean and maintain RV dump stations.
Maintain landscaped areas by mowing (riding and push mowers), trimming and pruning of trees and shrubbery, and weeding flower and shrub beds.
Chemically, manually, and mechanically control vegetation.
Collect garbage bags, and pick up litter and debris in and around rest areas and highways.
Inspect restrooms and perform minor repairs needed to stalls, plumbing, lighting, and paper dispensers.
Communicate professionally and effectively with traveling public daily.
Maintain roadway features such as guardrail, signs or reflective features.
Operate tools, equipment and machinery including but not limited to hoist, chain saw, weed cutters, chipper, wrenches and other various hand and electric powered tools.
Collect data using an IPad and/or computer.

Required qualifications include:

High school diploma or equivalent.
A valid driver’s license to legally operate a state vehicle.
Ability and willingness to work any shift, including weekends and holidays, and be subject to overtime and emergency callouts.
Ability to move and transport up to 50 pounds.
Be able to work in all weather conditions including extreme conditions and temperatures on uneven terrain.
Be able to respond (physically arrive) to the Mottman Maintenance Facility within 60 minutes.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with others and contribute to a team effort.

Preferred qualifications include:

At least (1) one year experience performing landscaping activities such as mowing, pruning, fertilizing, and irrigating ornamental vegetation.
Possess basic computer skills to receive and send email, use the internet, and enter information into computer programs, forms and mobile technology devices.
Experience utilizing computer software such as Microsoft Office to include Excel, Word, and Outlook.
Knowledge on variety of cleaning agents and how to mix for effective cleaning.
At least (1) one year experience performing minor repair and maintenance of public buildings to include janitorial duties and plumbing/electrical systems.
