The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has an exciting opportunity for a motivated Engineer who has strong leadership skills and exceptional aptitude for managing projects. The Tacoma Project Engineering Office is looking for a Design Team Lead – TE3, who will be responsible for leading a Design Team. This position is responsible for managing, mentoring, and assigning work to a team of engineers and technicians performing design, developing Plans, Specifications, and Estimates (PS&E) in support of transportation projects. Required qualifications include:

One year of experience as a Transportation Engineer 2 or equivalent such as Bridge Engineer 2 or Transportation Planning Specialist 2.
Previous experience in performing mathematic calculations in an accurate and concise manner.
A broad understanding of transportation engineering and design requirements and processes.
Skills and ability to accurately review and interrupt engineering designs, contact plans and specifications and related documents.
Proven interpersonal skills that demonstrate the ability to effectively supervise, mentor, train, and identify career opportunities for staff.
Proficiency with computer software programs in order to prepare and review designs, interpret contract plans, prepare correspondence and engineering documents, manage and share data on networked systems and prepare budgets and schedules.
Excellent communication skills; both verbal and written.
Proven experience in managing multiple projects simultaneously under challenging deadlines.
Ability to work both an office setting and an outdoor environment; in adverse weather conditions, on steep and uneven terrain near fast moving traffic and heavy equipment.
Ability to safely lift materials and equipment up to 30 lbs.
Willingness and ability to work out of town for extended periods of time.
Valid driver’s license and the ability to travel to and from project locations.

Preferred qualifications include:

Successful completion of an Entry Management Core Program (ED & TD, AA).
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or closely related field.
Engineer-In-Training Certification.
Professional Engineer’s License in Civil Engineering.
Experience as a supervisor leading, coaching and managing assigned team.
Knowledge of WSDOT design process and requirements.
