Utah DOT reveals its special-event traffic-management secrets

After a brief introduction this video has some informative insights into how UDOT is able to finely tune its traffic management during busy special events across the state. For Rice-Eccles Stadium, in Salt Lake City, it works closely with a command center set up by University of Utah. It times 'ped scrambles' to get large numbers of pedestrians safely across busy roads, authorizes as much as four minutes of green time to cut exit times for drivers by up to 40 minutes, and is even able to react to predicted traffic situations depending on how a match is going.

New SmartTravel app helps keep traffic moving in Edmonton, Canada

The City of Edmonton in Alberta, Canada, this week (ends September 16) launched its SmartTravel app. The virtual driving assistant, which is free to download, works by giving audio warnings triggered by the location of the car. These prompts both reinforce existing roadsigns and give additional information to the driver, such as when they are approaching an accident blackspot, or if adverse weather is forecast. Traffic managers are hoping the scheme will reduce accidents and increase compliance with speed limits, therefore keeping traffic in the city flowing more freely.

How US transportation projects can secure extra funding from the FHWA

The USDOT's Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is currently promoting funds available through its Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement (CMAQ) program. Almost any transportation project could be eligible, so long as it has a positive effect on air quality in an area where improvement is required. This new video contains information about how transportation agencies can apply for this funding through state DOTs.
