Software Developer

Salary: Negotiable, depending on experience and qualifications

The Center for Advanced Transportation Technology Lab is an advanced transportation research and development laboratory at the University of Maryland, College Park. The CATT Lab’s research provides a bridge between the intelligent transportation systems (ITS) community and the information technology community. The CATT Lab specializes in data archiving, data retrieval and visualization, 3D modeling and simulation, software development, and other advanced technologies. The CATT Lab prides itself on being innovative and creative problem solvers with a strong will to “raise the bar” for the transportation R&D community. The primary resource of the CATT Lab is the interdisciplinary group of over 50 undergraduate and graduate researchers and talented staff.

Position description
The CATT Lab is looking to hire a full time software developer. Applicants will work with full time developers, DBAs, and student researchers to design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain new and existing software applications. An ideal candidate will utilize their knowledge, skill, and experience to lead a development team towards deployment of highly available and agile web applications, stable and reliable data processing applications, and innovative data analysis and visualization applications. In addition, applicants must be willing to learn new skills and stay current with industry standard and upcoming technologies and development practices. The applicant must be precise and thorough in order to maintain the CATT Laboratory’s reputation for real world deployment of stable and reliable leading-edge applications. Applicants will be expected to lead a small team of software developers and provide mentorship of new and junior employees. Applicants must have experience in interacting with databases using direct access and application data import and retrieval. Knowledge of standard SQL and relation database concepts is key. Developers will also help mentor undergraduate and graduate student developers. Good communication skills, teamwork, and a “will to learn” are essential.

Required skills
• Knowledge of software development lifecycle
• Object oriented programming with Java
• XML parsing and manipulation
• Bachelors Degree
• 1+ years of experience

Desired skills
• Knowledge of relational database concepts
• Standard SQL syntax

Desired experience
• PHP, Flex, ColdFusion
• JMS, Spring, Log4j, Hibernate, JAXB
• PostgreSQL
• Oracle 9i or 10g
