ONLINE POLL: IS DSRC BEING MUSCLED OUT? >>

In the October/November 2015 edition of Traffic Technology International magazine we spoke to three industry experts about the future of DSRC in the connected-vehicle realm.

While it seems certain that the wi-fi-based technology will remain essential for some functions, there was disagreement about whether it is still necessary for connecting vehicles to traffic signals in city locations. This is because there are new solutions coming online that utilize the cell-phone 3G/4G network for the same purpose. Here’s the gist of what our experts had to say...

The Big Debate: Is DSRC being muscled out?

Matt Ginsberg

“To take a light that is already connected to the internet and spend about US$20,000 putting in DSRC radio on that intersection is a mistake. There’s no other way to describe it. We typically end up costing municipalities $20,000 per city.”
Matt Ginsberg, CEO of Oregon-based startup Connected Signals

Carl Andersen

“It is my belief that a hybrid system that uses cellular to provide information along an intended course, with DSRC to provide real-time information for the next intersection, will likely prove to be an essential way to provide drivers with suitable information”
Carl Andersen, connected vehicle program manager for the FHWA

Graham Hellestrand

“I think it’s going to be economics that dominates this and the 4G people are very good at getting revenue. To put the DSRC throughout New York would be hugely expensive and there’s already 3G/4G coverage there. So the economics may dictate who wins”
Graham Hellestrand, founder and CEO, Embedded Systems Technology
