Congress urged to back ITS systems

Right: ITS leaders in the US are pressing Congress to invest in the deployment of traffic technology

US Congress has been urged by leading figures in the American ITS community to consider funding intelligent transport systems as it prepares to invest billions of dollars in the USA’s infrastructure.

A coalition of top transport officials from California, New York, Michigan and Oregon today called on Congress to make an intelligent infrastructure investment. The coalition, which is being led by ITS America, believes that investing in ITS systems will ease congestion, enhance productivity and create jobs.

The coalition hopes to convince the new Administration to consider the benefits of installing ITS applications, such as electronic tolling and intelligent intersections with synchronized traffic lights.

Scott Belcher, chief executive of ITS America says, “As Congress and the incoming Administration prepare to invest billions of dollars in the nation’s infrastructure, it is vital that the stimulus plan also puts our nation on the roads to long-term economic recovery and completeness. The systems that are being considered will make transportation safer, more efficient, and will lead to greater productivity and a cleaner environment.”

ITS America board Cchief, Randall H. Iwasaki, says, “Investing in ITS technologies will help reduce traffic congestion, prevent accidents before they happen, provide more effective incident and emergency response and reduce energy use and emissions. It is critical that we optimize this investment in our nation’s infrastructure by providing resources to deploy technologies that will save lives, time, money, and preserve the environment in addition to creating jobs and economic growth.
