Axis unveils new high-end IP network camera systems at ITS World Congress

Swedish network video systems company Axis Communications has been showing three new IP surveillance cameras at ITS World Congress in Copenhagen, together with an integrated traffic management system alongside partners Citilog and Genetec.

The transportation industry is demanding surveillance cameras with high zoom levels in order to identify driver’s faces, detect license plates or recognize and respond to incidents. To address this need, Axis has developed the Q1785-LE and Q1786-LE next generation high-end IP (Internet Protocol) network cameras with 32x zoom and OptimizedIR (infrared) for indoor and outdoor use.

With their 32x zoom, the cameras can be installed at a significant distance from the target area, yet still deliver high quality video to identify details in the scene. For example, if monitoring a roundabout where mounting is not possible, the camera can be placed more than 853ft (260m) away and still clearly show details not visible to the naked eye, such as car license plates. The robust cameras also feature an impact resistant aluminum casing and can withstand a wide temperature range.

The cameras are optimized for surveillance on highways or intersections, as well as general city surveillance. For instance, the cameras use corridor format, which specifically captures vertical scenes, such as long streets or perimeters. This focused view gives a more detailed scene than would be achieved with a panoramic shot. The cameras can also be paired with accessories for pole or dual mount installation. The Q17 Series features include high quality capture with Q1786-LE featuring 4MP resolution / Quad HD 1440p at 50/60 fps, and the Q1785-LE delivering 2MP / HDTV 1080p at 50/60 fps.

Axis has also unveiled the P3717-PLE multidirectional high image resolution camera that provides flexible positioning of four varifocal camera heads in one camera. This offers a panoramic 360° overview, or a combination of overviews and zoomed in details. Its IR illumination with individually controllable LEDs provide clear images even in low light or darkness. The cameras, with an integrated weathershield, can be used in any outdoor or in indoor area, from parking facilities, logistics hubs, street intersections and toll plazas. The four-in-one camera also enables a lower overall cost for cabling and installation services and includes a redundancy system between the SD card and server should the connection with the server fail.

Together with partners Citilog and Genetec, Axis has been showcasing a best-of-breed traffic management solution to help ease congestion and identify traffic incidents in real time. The system on show will highlight how incidents on road networks can be detected in real time using machine learning technology. This enables instant decision making to help manage an incident, easing traffic flow and congestion, and therefore reducing carbon emissions. The technology includes Citilog’s Automatic Incident Detection (AID) solution, Genetec’s Traffic Sense management platform, and Axis’ innovative IP network cameras.

“As our roads get busier, especially on motorways and cities, we are experiencing greater pollution, more accidents and increased congestion,” noted Daren Lang, regional manager for business development in Northern Europe at Axis.

“Identifying such issues in real time is crucial to help our transport systems run smoothly with less of an environmental impact, keeping road users safe and on the move.”
