WORLD FIRST: Fully modular traffic enforcement system

One of the highly innovative new products launched at Intertraffic Amsterdam last week (March 20-23) was Trafidar, from new Turkish startup Radarsan. The traffic enforcement system, which made its world debut at the show, is completely modular, so its creators describe it as being 'a bit like Lego.' Each and every part of the system can be unplugged and moved about within the specially built housing, or replaced with another part, depending on the customer requirements.

The different modules currently available include radar, ANPR, data storage, emissions detectors, cameras, noise detectors, GPS, remote control – even the onboard processor is replaceable, making it easier to keep pace with advancing technology. For the future its creators say there are an infinite number of new module possibilities.

The unit can either be mounted on a permanent fixing with wired power or it can be used on a tripod at the roadside, where it can be powered via modular batteries. Set up is easy and automatic via an onboard screen, which is modular too, of course.

The overarching concept is that when a customer’s requirements change, or technology advances, it is easy to swap out parts of the unit, so the solution will rapidly become much more cost effective than replacing whole units. The creators say that customers can expect a return on investment in two and a half years.

“For example, for regulations today you need an 8MP camera. But tomorrow you might need a 10MP camera,” founding partner Serhat Dogan (below) tells TrafficTechnologyToday.com. “So you just plug out the old model and put the new one in and it works straight away.

“We have tested it at the high-speed Formula 1 test track in Instanbul. It is all certified to EU regulations. And certified durability to IP66. Normally you can expect IP65, but we achieved an even higher durability rating." [IP65 certifies a product as ‘dust tight’ and protected against heavy seas or powerful jets of water].

“It also has big data management,” continues Dogan. “Each sensor is able to compute on its own, so it has edge computing capability. It covers all types of data – the collecting and processing of it – so it only needs to send the important information to the traffic management centre. It has AI technology, deep learning and onboard processing capability. Currently it has 1TB on-board storage… but if you’d like to add more, I can add more. It’s totally like Lego!”
