TomTom and Elektrobit to co-develop ‘Electronic Horizon’ for automated driving

Global location-based services and mapping technology company TomTom, and Continental’s wholly-owned subsidiary Elektrobit (EB,) will collaborate on the development of an ‘Electronic Horizon’ system for driver assistance functions and autonomous vehicles.

The joint project will combine TomTom’s AutoStream system and the EB robinos Predictor software platform to establish an easy-to-use demonstrator, evaluation and development platform for the automotive market. TomTom AutoStream is an innovative ‘Cloud to Car’ map delivery system that streams the latest map data from the TomTom Cloud to the vehicle.

The system allows automated vehicles to ‘see’ the road ahead through the use of live streaming Advanced Driving Attributes, such as gradient and curvature, TomTom’s HD Map, and Live data such as dynamic speed limits and real-time traffic information.

EB’s robinos Predictor is an in-vehicle Electronic Horizon system that uses this map data to provide highly accurate and up-to-date information about the road ahead for predictive driver assistance functions. This allows car makers to improve safety and comfort in automated driving situations. The robinos Predictor suite’s electronic horizon-based advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) functions allow auto makers to provide their customers with a range of popular features, such as curve-speed warnings, adaptive curve headlights, traffic-sign display, range determination, lane keeping and fuel-efficient driving systems.

“When it comes to automated driving, reliability is paramount,” noted Martin Schleicher, executive vice president and head of business management at Elektrobit. “We are delighted to work alongside our long-time partner, TomTom, in delivering a state-of-the-art solution that will enable car makers to equip their vehicles with more precise automated driving systems by leveraging highly precise maps.”

Willem Strijbosch, TomTom’s head of autonomous driving, commented, “Our collaboration with Elektrobit allows us to power automated driving functions with the latest high definition map, while reducing complexity and time to market for our customers.”
