Institute of Transportation Engineers and National Parking Association to cooperate on updates to key parking analysis tools

The Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) and the National Parking Association (NPA) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to work together on the development of uprated versions of two leading parking industry resources.

The ITE’s Parking Generation manual and NPA’s Shared Parking tools were last updated in 2010 and 2009, respectively, so the two organizations are developing these products in coordination with each other to ensure consistency and ease of use for practitioners.

By harnessing the collective experience of both organizations, the goal is to publish definitive parking guides that will usher in the next generation of best parking practices. A joint call for data is expected to be issued early this spring, with a target of delivering the two products by early 2019.

The ITE’s Parking Generation manual is expected to follow the lead of the modernized, updated and expanded Trip Generation manual, 10th Edition. The analyses in Parking Generation will differentiate the levels of parking demand observed at rural, general urban/suburban, dense multi‐use urban and city center core sites. Similar to the Trip Generation manual, Parking Generation will be available in hard copy, electronic and cloud‐based formats in order to cater to the format that works best for users.

ITE also intends to produce a web‐based app (ITEParkGen) that enables a user to produce parking generation data plots and statistics for the complete database, as well as filtering by year and location.

The NPA’s Shared Parking, 3rd Edition will provide a perspective on case studies and real usage of parking assets. NPA, the Urban Land Institute and International Council of Shopping Centers are collaborating to bring current, real‐world data and examples of shared parking uses of parking assets that will provide insight into the future of parking through both print and online content.

“We are excited to be working with the National Parking Association to update these essential industry resources,” noted Jeffrey F Paniati, the ITE’s executive director and CEO. “With the combined expertise of both our organizations we expect to produce two very dynamic and forward-thinking analysis tools for the transportation industry.”

Christine Banning, NPA’s president, commented, “We are pleased to work alongside ITE to update these resources with current data reflecting today’s transportation environment in a fact‐based approach to analysis and planning. Shared Parking explores the transportation dynamic in the form of facilities, usage and trends that will impact ratios, revenue and asset performance.”
