Kapsch to deploy EcoTrafiX management platform as part of Málaga’s Smart City strategy

Austrian traffic technology supplier, Kapsch TrafficCom has been awarded a contract to supply an integrated mobility management system for the city of Málaga in southern Spain, as part of the council’s Smart City strategy.

Kapsch will supply the equipment that will be deployed in the city’s MOVIMA (Malaga Traffic Mobility Observatory) traffic management center, as well as providing the access control system for the historical city center. The integrated mobility management system, developed by the City Council with Kapsch technology, will form part of the city’s Smart City ambitions and will help position Málaga as a model for modern urban management in Europe. With a total investment around €5.8m (US$6.8m), the project includes the implementation of Kapsch’s EcoTrafix software suite, which will allow the integration of all the city’s systems for urban mobility into one unified platform, while also providing real-time traffic data that will enable citizens and visitors to choose the best transportation option for their journeys, promoting sustainable, safe and efficient multimodal transport.

Kapsch will manage the operations and maintenance of the Málaga Control Center through the integration of all the hardware and information systems in a single Integrated Mobility Operations Center, which will improve communication and collaboration between all the systems and agents involved in the city’s traffic management. The new focus will reduce the costs stemming from traffic congestion and optimize resources via more efficient planning, thus helping Málaga raise its profile as a Smart City. Another key benefit of the project, will be the capability of city authorities to respond to any incident affecting urban roads and mobility, which will be achieved through the installation of an Events and Incidents Management module available within the EcoTrafiX platform. Through this module, the council will be able to reduce response times in the case of events such as roadworks, bottlenecks or accidents, and to establish coordinated solutions and responses with the aim of providing citizens with more reliable journeys, while helping to reduce vehicle emissions.

“We are proud that the City Hall of Málaga, one of the leading smart cities, has trusted us to improve its urban mobility management,” said André Laux, COO of Kapsch TrafficCom. “This new contract represents an important step forward that evidences our capacity and solid position in the intelligent traffic management solutions sector for Smart Cities.”
