Image Sensing Systems launches wrong way driver alerting system

One of the leading developers of above-ground detection technology for intelligent transportation systems (ITS) and image sensing systems (ISS) has announced the addition of a wrong way alerting system to its portfolio of highway monitoring and management products.

Drivers traveling the wrong way on a highway pose a serious safety risk and often result in severe or fatal accidents, so the detection of these wrong way drivers is vital to reducing the risks to other road users.

The effects of these incidents also lead to closures of the highway for many hours, causing reduced travel times, increased congestion and damage to property. Image Sensing’s new wrong way system is an all-in-one solution that provides reliable wrong way detection and notification on highway ramps.

The ISS automatic incident detection (AID) wrong way alerting system can detect multiple lanes of traffic using a single camera, and provides accurate detection and fast notification to help improve the safety performance of roadways.

The Wrong Way Alerting system makes us of the high-definition video stream from the company’s patented RTMS Sx-300 HDCAM radar product, providing radar-based data collection and high-definition (HD) video analytics for a complete detection solution. The combined radar and HD camera unit detects wrong way vehicles and transfers the information to the Wrong Way processor, which sends an automated message alert with an image snapshot via email or SMS text message.

The system also provides a 30-second video of the event, allowing traffic operators to visually confirm the wrong way vehicle, and provide emergency officials with its details to expedite enforcement actions. In addition to the video verification and event reporting, the system also enables integration with flashing signs and in-pavement lighting products to provide immediate feedback to the offending driver. The system features:

• All-weather detection using one camera;
• Simple setup and configuration
• Pre- and post-video event capture and storage of incident;
• Excellent image quality, even in low light conditions;
• HD video streaming of incidents;
• Covers eight lanes of traffic up to 165ft (50m).

“We recognized the safety and life-saving need for a reliable, accurate wrong way detection system and applied considerable development resources and time into developing this ground-breaking AID solution,” said Jim Cikanek, director of product management at ISS.

“Early detection of wrong way drivers reduces the likelihood of a fatal crash and saves lives. Our system is designed to alert motorists and simultaneously notify authorities, allowing them to intercept the driver.”
