TRL to showcase its vision of future transport at Highways UK 2017

The UK’s Transport Laboratory (TRL) is returning to the Highways UK event for 2017 following the announcement of a number of new innovative projects.

Taking place at the NEC in Birmingham on November 8-9, TRL will communicate its broad expertise across the transport sector, focusing on its core innovation programs and how the company is shaping the future of transport. Highways UK is an event for the people and organisations involved in the planning, designing, building, operating and future-proofing of the UK’s road network. It is not a trade show, but is intended to showcase the strategic planning and thought leadership at the heart of the country’s road infrastructure development, with the event including a major exhibition and multiple content streams across nine theatres.

Highways UK comes at a pivotal time for TRL, coinciding with new trials for the GATEway and MOVE_UK projects, as well as new research into truck platooning and the development of the Smart Mobility Living Lab in London. In addition to showcasing its transport expertise at the event, TRL will host five industry briefings together with partners. These will cover a range of future-focused subjects including: the electrification of vehicle fleets, platooning vehicles, new technology on strategic roads, asset data and the Smart Mobility Living Lab:London.

TRL’s involvement includes:

  • ‘Electrification of the vehicle fleet and the implications for strategic roads’ - hosted by TRL, with speakers: Denis Naberezhnykh, head of ULEV and energy at TRL; Patrick Duprat, R&D program manager at Alstom; and Peter Stevens, head of external and government affairs for Nissan;
  • ‘The impact of technology on the future SRN (Strategic Road Network)’ – a panel discussion chaired by TRL’s CEO, Rob Wallis, and featuring panelists: Mike Wilson, chief engineer at Highways England (HE); James Arbib, co-founder of Rethinkx; and Jennifer Schooling, director of the Cambridge Center for Smart Infrastructure and Construction;
  • ‘The UK’s first real-world operational trial of platooning vehicles’ -hosted by: TRL, with speakers: Richard Cuerden, academy director at TRL; and Jack Martens, project manager for advanced technology and external contacts at DAF Trucks;
  • ‘Beyond conventional asset data’ - hosted by TRL, with speaker: Matt Sercombe, infrastructure director at TRL;
  • ‘Smart Mobility Living Lab: London’ - hosted by TRL, with speakers: Iwan Parry, strategic partnering at TRL; Aarti Gupta, project lead at Costain; and Peter Shearman, concept development leader for Cisco Create.
