Canada's Transport Minister to speak at ITS World Congress

The co-hosts of the 2017 ITS World Congress, ITS America and ITS Canada, have announced that Canada’s Minister of Transport, Marc Garneau, will speak at the opening keynote session of the event, which starts on October 29 in Montréal, Quebec.

The 2017 ITS World Congress is the premier event in the field of intelligent transportation, and brings together the international ITS community to collaborate and discuss the future of reliability, safety, equal access and dynamic user experience, as it relates to integrated mobility innovations and advances that are poised to transform transportation logistics.

Along with Garneau, confirmed speakers include member and former chairman of the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and Michigan Governor Rick Snyder. Garneau, will speak at the Congress on October 31, to share his vision and plan for Canada’s transportation system through the ‘Transportation 2030’ initiative. In his position as Minister of Transport, he has emphasized the critical role played by intelligent transportation and has worked diligently to put forth his strategic vision for transportation in the country.

“Intelligent transportation systems will play a major role in our future and are an important component of Transportation 2030, a strategic plan for the future of transportation in Canada,” explained Garneau. “I am pleased to participate in the 2017 Intelligent Transportation Systems World Congress, which offers an important opportunity to discuss with industry leaders and governments around the world how new technologies are transforming transportation networks and services. By exploring new ways of using digital information and innovative communication technologies, we are contributing to the well-being of our citizens, while ensuring strong economic growth.”

The Congress organizers have also announced a series of live demonstrations, including:
• Virtual Traffic Management Centre (VTMC) – ITS Canada will showcase what is happening in real time at TMCs across the country;
• Connected/ Autonomous Vehicles and Traffic Lights – Connected Signals will demonstrate two approaches to connected traffic light implementation, one data-based and the other vision-based, to show the benefit of predictive technology and data-based capabilities;
• Marben Products and FLIR ITS – A connected vehicle demonstration using communication between vehicles and roadside infrastructure, equipped with software to enable V2X safety applications;
• Observing Live Bicycle and Pedestrian Detection – Witness first-hand the safety benefits of live video at busy intersections with on-street technology, presented by Iteris;
• Build Your Smart City by Smart Parking – Participants will take a short ride in a Papier Parking Transit vehicle to experience in real time space detection technology as soon as the vehicle arrives at a parking spot.
