Dahua adopts Theia’s 4K lenses on its IP box video surveillance camera

Chinese video surveillance equipment company Dahua Technology has adopted a range of 4K lenses from USA-based optics specialist Theia Technologies for use on its IPC-HF81230E Ultra HD box camera.

With a horizontal resolution in the order of 4000 pixels, 4K is a revolutionary breakthrough in image processing technology, which has the potential for many applications in the traffic and transportation industries. Dahua’s IPC-HF81230E Ultra HD box camera delivers four times the resolution of standard HDTV 1080p cameras, and offers superior picture quality and image details. 4K resolution considerably improves the clarity of magnified scenes, enabling the IPC-HF81230E camera to view or record crisp-clear forensic video from large areas. With Sony’s advanced STARVIS image sensor, which increases the pixel size to 1.85µm, Dahua’s Ultra HD unit is capable of delivering 4K resolution video under lowlight environment. This makes the camera ideal for video surveillance applications that require low-illumination performance together with high definition, such as in tunnels or indoor parking facilities.

Theia’s 4K lenses offer resolution performance matching the image quality promised by 4K sensors and provide good coverage of the larger 1/1.7in 4K imagers. Theia’s varifocal lens family covers a horizontal field of view from 112° to 9°, with the SL410 4-10mm lens and SL1250 12-50mm lens. The CS-mount lenses maintain 4K resolution in day and night conditions, with less than 5 microns focus shift in near IR (infrared) light, and are extremely compact at only 52mm long. Compared to other commonly found 1/1.7in format 4K lenses with similar features, they are much smaller, allowing them to fit into more compact enclosures. At F/1.4, the SL410 boasts the fastest ‘F number’ and likely the best light gathering ability of any equivalent format varifocal lens currently available.

“When paired with Theia’s 4K lenses, our IPC-HF81230E camera delivers very high image quality to enable analytics and applications requiring fine details,” said Daniel Chau, Dahua’s overseas marketing director. “These 4K cameras provide video surveillance professionals with probably the most advanced imaging technology available.”

Mark Peterson, VP for advanced technology at Theia, explained, “The emergence of 4K resolution in video surveillance will empower analytics-rich applications, such as facial recognition, behavioral studies, and ANPR, where a high level of detail and precision is required. The technology is also an obvious choice for situations in which there is a lot of activity, or large areas where there are limited options for placing cameras, yet the entire area needs covering.”
