Tilson and MobilityTech partnership to deploy ITS on New Hampshire turnpike

The New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDOT) has announced the two companies that will be responsible for a design/build intelligent transportation systems (ITS) project along the Frederick E Everett Turnpike (Central New Hampshire Turnpike).

Tilson, a Portland, Maine-based information technology professional services and network deployment company, has been awarded a US$4.2m contract for the ITS deployment. Tilson’s strategic partner on the project will be MobilityTech, a Massachusetts-based management consultancy providing services to public and private ITS, transportation engineering and construction organizations.

Tilson builds, integrates and maintains information technology and communications infrastructure, and has its network construction headquarters in Manchester, New Hampshire. The ITS deployment is the first project to be awarded to Tilson and MobilityTech following the launch of their collaborative partnership in January.

The Everett Turnpike project includes the design, planning, and installation of dynamic message signs (DMS), closed circuit video (CCTV) cameras, roadway detectors, and wireless communications systems linking the ITS components to the NHDOT’s Transportation Management Center (TMC).

These systems streamline incident response and management, improve safety in work zones, facilitate greater fuel efficiency for road users, and create ‘smart roads’ that could potentially guide future autonomous vehicles.

The project makes use of the unique qualifications and experience of all the organizations involved: Tilson’s expertise in fiber optics, RF (radio frequency) engineering and wireless network construction, and construction management; MobilityTech’s expertise in planning, designing, implementing, and operating transportation technology projects; and the IBI Group’s deep ITS and systems engineering experience.

“The ITS will deliver real-time traffic and road condition information that helps people travel more safely, and it helps New Hampshire’s DOT manage their facilities more efficiently,” said Mike Costa, MobilityTech’s founder and principal. “Autonomous vehicles are right around the corner. The wireless infrastructure that Tilson builds out will be a key enabler to emerging technologies, such as self-driving vehicles.”
