TomTom launches connected and autonomous technology demonstrator, at ITS European Congress

As part of its mission to be seen as a major contributor to the escalating move towards the introduction of connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) worldwide, Dutch mapping, navigation and traffic information provider, TomTom, has released a demonstration of its capabilities.

TomTom has announced the launch of its Localization Demonstrator, a new demonstration device that uses its HD Map and RoadDNA technology to provide lane-level localization of a vehicle. The device, using sensors expected in autonomous vehicles, combines TomTom’s award-winning autonomous driving content with its correlation software, in order to demonstrate the precision of the company’s data, and the ability to perform real-time lane positioning. HD Map and RoadDNA are two revolutionary, highly accurate digital map products that are helping automated vehicles precisely locate themselves on the road and plan maneuvers, even when traveling at high speeds. Launched commercially in 2015, the new technologies are being rolled out in strategic locations, including Germany and several states in the USA, and are the subject of key partnerships with other automotive suppliers, such as Bosch.

“We believe that this demo enables our customers to truly experience the powerful nature of our autonomous driving products,” said Willem Strijbosch, head of autonomous driving at TomTom. “This demo not only illustrates our product innovation, but also enables us to elevate the level of engagement with our automotive partners.”

TomTom has also announced that it has been selected by Volvo Cars as the provider of location and navigation content and services for its new infotainment platform. From 2019, Volvo’s customers across the globe, across all carlines on the SPA and CMA platforms, will be able to enjoy a high quality navigation experience powered by TomTom’s complete suite of components, both embedded and cloud-based. This agreement marks the first-time collaboration between TomTom and Volvo, and will include: the modular, connected NavKit navigation software engine; automotive-grade modular digital Navigation Data Standard (NDS) maps, allowing for incremental real-time map updates; real-time Traffic information and travel-related services; Online Search, giving remote access to an up-to-date and complete set of addresses and POIs in over 120 countries; and NavCloud synching and sharing service across devices.

“We are extremely pleased to announce this collaboration between TomTom and Volvo Cars, one of the most respected car brands in the world,” said Antoine Saucier, managing director of TomTom Automotive. “Thanks to the trust that Volvo Cars has put into our products, we are uniquely positioned in the automotive industry to offer Volvo Cars future-proof systems that meet the rapidly changing market requirements.”
